Mefferd begins by explaining no-till farming systems and summarizing organic no-till techniques, but most of the book is devoted to edited interviews with growers, in which themes of soil health, climate change, and farm profitability come up as often as farming techniques. The reason, he says, is that that all these elements must balance for the system to work; maximizing any one at the expense of the others would lead to the same collapse that mainstream agriculture is experiencing--depleted soils, mechanized corporate mega-farms, and climate instability.
