But there were problems no one knew exactly where the Titanic had sunk, and, even if they had, the technology to reach the ship, which lay on the ocean floor almost two miles down, didn't exist. By the 1970s, however, new technologies allowed explorers like Dr. Richard Ballard to search the deep ocean. Finally, in 1985, Dr. Ballard found something.
