The year is 1991. Mona Hasan is a young Muslim girl growing up in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. The first Gulf War has broken out close by, but it isn't what she expects -- "We didn't even get any days off school! Just my luck." However, the event sparks major change in her life, as her family moves from big-city Dubai in the UAE to small-town Darmouth on the east coast of Canada.
