Shubeik lubeik [graphic novel] / Deena Mohamed.
"A brilliant and imaginative debut graphic novel that brings to life a fantastical Cairo where wishes are real. Author, illustrator, and translator Deena Mohamed presents a literary, feminist, Arab-centric graphic novel that marries magic and the socio-political realities of contemporary Egypt. Shubeik Lubeik-a fairytale rhyme meaning "Your Wish is My Command" in Arabic-is the story of three characters navigating a world where wishes are literally for sale; mired in bureaucracy and the familiar prejudices of our world, the more expensive the wish, the more powerful and therefore the more likely to work as intended. The novel's three distinct parts tell the story of three first class wishes as used by Aziza, Nour, and Shokry, each grappling with the challenge inherent in trying to make your most deeply held desire come true. Deena's mix of calligraphy and contemporary styles, brings to life a vibrant Cairene neighborhood, and a cast of characters whose struggles and triumphs are deeply resonant. Shubeik Lubeik heralds the arrival of a huge new talent and a brave, literary, political, and feminist new voice in comics"-- Provided by publisher.

A brilliantly original debut graphic novel that imagines a fantastical alternate Cairo where wishes really do come true. Shubeik Lubeikâa fairy tale rhyme that means âyour wish is my commandâ in Arabicâis the story of three people who are navigating a world where wishes are literally for sale.

âThe mythic qualities of Mohamedâs world bring our own world into sharper focus . . . Mohamedâs humor often feels like a protest, as do the thick and assertive lines of her drawings . . . The effect is gritty, brazen, and full of spunk.ââThe New Yorker
Three wishes that are sold at an unassuming kiosk in Cairo link Aziza, Nour, and Shokry, changing their perspectives as well as their lives. Aziza learned early that life can be hard, but when she loses her husband and manages to procure a wish, she finds herself fighting bureauÂcracy and inequality for the right to haveâand makeâthat wish. Nour is a privileged college student who secretly struggles with depression and must decide whether or not to use their wish to try to âfixâ this depression, and then figure out how to do it. And, finally, Shokry must grapple with his religious convictions as he decides how to help a friend who doesnât want to use their wish. Deena Mohamed brings to life a cast of characters whose struggles and triumphs are heartbreaking, inspiring, and deeply resonant.
Although their stories are fantasticalâfeaturing talking donkeys, dragons, and cars that can magically avoid trafficâeach of these people grapples with the very real challenge of trying to make their most deeply held desires come true.
