Call me Gray / written by Andrew Larsen and Bells Larsen ; illustrated by Tallulah Fontaine.

Larsen, Andrew, 1960- (Author). Larsen, Bells. (Added Author). Fontaine, Tallulah. (Added Author).

Summary:

"Every winter, as soon as it's cold enough, a child and their father build an ice rink. It's a tradition -- something they do together that never changes. But this year, something is different. Something feels different. "Do you ever feel mixed up about who you are?" the child asks their father while they shovel snow. Their dad says he wanted to be an astronaut, once... but that's not quite what they meant. As the day goes on, the child tries again, asking more questions. Eventually, they tell their dad, "I look like a boy, but sometimes I feel more like a girl." The child shares that their name feels like an itchy sweater, and they want to change it to "Gray." It's a big change, but one they can grow into together. And when Gray's dad finally uses their chosen name, it feels warm and right, just like hot chocolate after the first skate of the season. Even though Gray's understanding of themself and their identity is changing, the traditions they share with their father -- and the love they have for each other -- stay the same. Call Me Gray is about the joy and comfort a child feels when a parent affirms their identity by using their chosen name."-- Provided by publisher.
