Volume 1 begins with a series of 12 overview essays tracing the development of English literature from its origins to the present. The remainder of volume 1 and all of volume 2 are devoted to individual writers, with each entry comprising a biography, a complete list of the writer's published books, a selected list of bibliographies and critical studies on the writer, and a signed critical essay.
