  • Baker & Taylor
Provides a fascinating look at how Shakespeare's Sonnets came to be collected, compiled, printed and distributed for the first time in May 1609 by publisher Thomas Thorpe and printer George Eld.
  • Book News
Shakespeare is endlessly intriguing. Heylin, whose previous work has been on Orson Welles and Bob Dylan, now investigates Shakespeare's sonnets. This is not a literary interpretation but a history of the publication of the sonnets as a "bookleg" edition, without the author's knowledge or permission. Heylin discusses the problem of unauthorized edition, still with us today. He also follows the debate through the years on the authorship of the poems and the identity of the mysterious "Mr. W. H." who may or may not have inspired all the poems. The lack of footnotes is not a serious problem as Heylin makes his sources clear in the text. This new angle on the sonnets and the background to their publication is intriguing and worth including in any Shakespeare library. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
  • Perseus Publishing
In this lively, fascinating account of the publication of Shakespeare’s Sonnets, noted biographer Clinton Heylin brings their convoluted history to light, beginning with the first complete appearance of the Sonnets in print in May, 1609. He introduces us to the ?unholy alliance” involved in this precarious enterprise: Thomas Thorpe, the publisher, a self-described ?well wishing adventurer;” George Eld, the printer, heavily embroiled in large-scale pirating; William Aspley, the prestigious bookseller, who mysteriously ended his association with Thorpe soon after.

Leaving the calamitous world of Elizabethan publishing, Heylin goes on to chart the many editions of the Sonnets through the years and the editorial decisions that led to their present configuration. Passionate, astute, and brilliantly entertaining, the result is a concise and vivid history of perhaps the greatest poetry ever written.
