Chilean Experiences in East German Cinema. by Scheumann, Gerhard,film director.; Jordan, Günter,film director.; Steinheisser, Jürgen,film director.; Ackermann, Rainer,film director.; Milanov, Valentin,film director.; Heynowski, Walter,film director.; DEFA Film Library (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by DEFA Film Library in 1974.In the 1970s, the East German DEFA Studios responded to the military coup in Chile in 1973. They produced films about Chile and Chilean exiles that were not simply reactions to the political upheavals or demonstrations of solidarity with the Chilean people. In many cases, Chilean artists were directly involved in the creation of these films or were central to the film’s story. This program of six short documentaries features Chilean music (Aparcoa, 1977) and tells daily stories of Chilean exiles in their new East German homeland (A Chilean Wedding, 1977; Copihuito, 1977). The three films by the legendary H&S Studio, a private East German film group, are part of their 10-film Chilean Cycle (1974-1985). They use rare footage to picture the situation at the presidential palace La Moneda on September 11, 1973, the day of the military coup (Fellow Citizens, 1974), and investigate dictator Pinochet’s politics (Psalm 18, 1974) and underground resistance (Money Troubles, 1975).Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Chilean Films in Exile - Shorts by Juan Forch. by Forch, Juan,film director.; Herrmann, Jörg,film director.; Barke, Lothar,film director.; Börner, Michael,film director.; Hofmann, Rolf,film director.; DEFA Film Library (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by DEFA Film Library in 1975.The Chilean director and poet Juan Forch (1948-) immigrated via Mexico to East Germany after the military coup in 1973. He joined the DEFA Studio for Animation Films in Dresden and learned the craft of animation. Between 1975 and 1978, he made several animation and documentary films drawing on his Chilean background and his political experiences in exile. The photo collages Chile Lives (1976) and Nobody Can Stop the Revolution (1976), the latter in collaboration with media artist Lutz Dammbeck, proclaim the hope of a victory of the progressive forces over the Pinochet dictatorship. The collage Chile (1975) by Forch and Jörg Herrmann reveals the USA as the backer of the military coup on September 11, 1973. The trick collage Hitlerpinochet (1975) by Forch and Jörg Herrmann draws similarities between the political slogans of Adolf Hitler and Augusto Pinochet. In 1976, Forch filmed Chilean students in Dresden drawing a mural in honor of former President Salvador Allende. The cut-out animation film Neutron Peace? (1977) offers a warning against a nuclear war emanating from the USA. Forch creates a visually and colorfully powerful epic about the life of the indigenous Mapuche in the cut-out film Lautaro (1977), his most comprehensive work at the Dresden studio. Finally, the animation film Rosaura (1978) by Lothar Barke atmospherically translates a poem by Juan Forch into images.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Daytime Revolution. by Nelson, Erik,film director.; Seale, Bobby,actor.; Carlin, George,actor.; Rubin, Jerry,actor.; Lennon, John,actor.; Douglas, Mike,actor.; Ono, Yoko,actor.; Kino Lorber (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Bobby Seale, George Carlin, Jerry Rubin, John Lennon, Mike Douglas, Yoko OnoOriginally produced by Kino Lorber in 2024.For one extraordinary week beginning on February 14th, 1972, the Revolution WAS televised. DAYTIME REVOLUTION takes us back in time to the week that John Lennon and Yoko Ono descended upon a Philadelphia broadcasting studio to co-host the iconic Mike Douglas Show, at the time the most popular show on daytime television with an audience of 40 million viewers a week. What followed was five unforgettable episodes of television, with Lennon and Ono at the helm and Douglas bravely keeping the show on track. Acting as both producers and hosts, Lennon and Ono handpicked their guests, including controversial choices like Yippie founder Jerry Rubin and Black Panther Chairman Bobby Seale, as well as political activist Ralph Nader and comic truth teller George Carlin. Their version of daytime TV was a radical take on the traditional format, incorporating candid Q&A sessions with their transfixed audience, conversations about current issues like police violence and women’s liberation, conceptual art events, and one-of-a-kind musical performances, including a unique duet with Lennon and Chuck Berry and a poignant rendition of Lennon’s “Imagine.” A document of the past that speaks to our turbulent present, DAYTIME REVOLUTION captures the power that art can have when it reaches out to communicate, the prescience of that dialogue, and the bravery of two artists who never took the easy way out as they fought for their vision of a better world.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Eames: The Architect and The Painter. by Cohn, Jason,film director.; Jersey, Bill,film director.; Kanopy (Firm);
Originally produced by First Run Features in 2011.Design history was born in a cavernous warehouse on a gritty street in Venice Beach, California, where Charles and Ray Eames set up their Renaissance-style studio in the optimistic flush of American victory during World War II. Jason Cohn and Bill Jersey's definitive cinematic foray into the world of the Eames is the first film to be made about Charles and Ray since their deaths - and the only one that peers deeply inside the link between their artistic collaboration and sometimes tortured love for one another. Insightfully narrated by James Franco, the film brings to light a virgin cache of archival material, visually stunning films, love letters, photographs and artifacts produced in mind-boggling volume by Charles and Ray with their talented staff during the hypercreative forty-year epoch of the Eames Office. Interviews with family members and design historians guide the viewer on an intimate tour of the Eames era, while junior designers who were swept into the 24-7 world of "The Eamery," as they called it, flesh out a fascinatingly complex blueprint of this husband-and-wife powerhouse. The work of Charles and Ray Eames remains an ideal of design at its most virtuous - an alchemical combination of beauty and purpose. Their light and whimsical designs became emblematic of a new West Coast lifestyle whose influence reached Europe, Asia, and beyond. Though the Eameses are best known for their ubiquitous furniture and the signature innovation of the classic Eames chair, this essential documentary shows Charles and Ray applying the same process of inquiry to architecture, exhibitions and their quirky, beautiful films.Mode of access: World Wide Web.
