Confessions A Novel [electronic resource] : by Airey, Catherine.aut; cloudLibrary;
"Confessions is a remarkable debut. A complex and compulsive read that unravels the intricate twists and revelations among three generations of women with elegance and urgency." —Miranda Cowley Heller, author of The Paper Palace For fans of The Goldfinch and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, a mesmerizing and absorbing debut that follows three generations of women from New York to rural Ireland and back again. New York City, late September 2001. The walls of the city are papered over with photos of the missing. Cora Brady’s father is there, the poster she made taped to columns and bridges. When a letter arrives from an aunt she didn’t know existed in Ireland with the offer of a new life, the name jogs a memory: an old videocassette game Cora used to play as a child where two sisters must save the students of a mysterious boarding school. County Donegal, 1974. An eclectic group of artists known as the Screamers arrives in Burtonport and moves into the old schoolhouse down the road from where Róisín lives with her older sister Máire. Alternately kind and cruel, brilliant artist Máire is a mystery to Róisín, as is Máire’s relationship with the boy next door, Michael. When the Screamers look to hire an artist in residence, Róisín enlists Michael’s help to get Máire the job, setting in motion a chain of events that will put an ocean between the sisters and threaten to tear them apart forever. Burtonport, 2018. Lyca Brady lives in a sprawling old house with her mother, Cora, and great aunt, Ro. Abortion has just been legalized in Ireland, and Lyca is struggling to find herself outside her mother’s activism. An unexpected message from a childhood friend sends Lyca searching her house’s mysterious attic, with its strange collection of old medical equipment, piles of paperwork, and dusty boxes of ancient video games. There, she unearths secrets hidden for decades—secrets perhaps better left unknown. Catherine Airey’s haunting debut spins a mesmerizing story of family and fate, survival and revelation, examining the irresistible gravity of the past—how it endures through generations, pervasively present even when buried or forgotten.

Heist by Causey, Frances,filmmaker; Goldmacher, Donald,filmmaker; Donald Goldmacher (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Bernie Sanders, Van Jones, David Cay Johnson, Nomi Prins, Robert Crandall, Robert KuttnerOriginally produced by Donald Goldmacher in 2011.This investigative documentary reveals how American corporations orchestrated the dismantling of middle-class prosperity through rampant deregulation, the outsourcing of jobs, and tax policies favoring businesses and the wealthy. HEIST exposes the roots of the American economic crisis and the destruction of the American dream.. The collapse of the U.S. economy is the result of conscious choices made over thirty five years by a small group: leaders of corporations and their elected allies, and the biggest lobbying interest in Washington, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. To these individuals, the collapse is not a catastrophe, but rather the planned outcome of their long, patient work. For the rest of the country, it is merely the biggest heist in American history.. "(HEIST) has the virtue of taking the long view of a crisis that recent films like INSIDE JOB and TOO BIG TO FAIL have only sketchily explored. It makes a strong case that government regulation of business is essential for democracy to flourish." — Stephen Holden, The New York Times. "Wherever one's politics fall on the spectrum, there is much in here — such as a maddening video Filmclip in which an American law firm offers counsel on how to avoid hiring American workers — likely to give one pause." — Mindy Farabee, L.A. Chilean Experiences in East German Cinema. by Scheumann, Gerhard,film director.; Jordan, Günter,film director.; Steinheisser, Jürgen,film director.; Ackermann, Rainer,film director.; Milanov, Valentin,film director.; Heynowski, Walter,film director.; DEFA Film Library (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by DEFA Film Library in 1974.In the 1970s, the East German DEFA Studios responded to the military coup in Chile in 1973. They produced films about Chile and Chilean exiles that were not simply reactions to the political upheavals or demonstrations of solidarity with the Chilean people. In many cases, Chilean artists were directly involved in the creation of these films or were central to the film’s story. This program of six short documentaries features Chilean music (Aparcoa, 1977) and tells daily stories of Chilean exiles in their new East German homeland (A Chilean Wedding, 1977; Copihuito, 1977). The three films by the legendary H&S Studio, a private East German film group, are part of their 10-film Chilean Cycle (1974-1985). They use rare footage to picture the situation at the presidential palace La Moneda on September 11, 1973, the day of the military coup (Fellow Citizens, 1974), and investigate dictator Pinochet’s politics (Psalm 18, 1974) and underground resistance (Money Troubles, 1975).Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Walking disaster : my life through heaven and hell / by Whibley, Deryck,1980-author.;
"This candid memoir of punk rock, fame, and endurance from Deryck Whibley, lead singer of Sum 41, follows Whibley's rise from a punk kid in Canada to an international star. From his earliest days as a kid in Canada, Deryck Whibley was a punk who loved music and couldn't wait to achieve something bigger and better than the humble path that lay before him. Raised by a single mom and constantly moving from place to place, Deryck was used to being the new kid, starting fights (or finishing them), and finding friends who shared his sensibility for chaotic fun and loud music. Sum 41 was born of a group of friends who loved to jam, shared a DIY ethos, and were determined to be rock stars one day. Walking Disaster is Deryck's story, but it is also the untold story of Sum 41. Deryck takes you backstage, into the recording booth, and through the highest highs and lowest lows of the band whose story is inextricably woven with his own. With his insightful, earnest, and genuine voice, Deryck gets real about fame, fortune, and the music industry. From winning at the MTV Video Music Awards, being nominated for a Grammy, his high-profile relationships and friendships, contending with invasive paparazzi, and suffering from health issues that brought him to the brink, Deryck offers a forthright and unforgettable memoir"--

Second life : having a child in the digital age / by Hess, Amanda(Journalist),author.;
Includes bibliographical references.""Before I was pregnant, I was a person." The long awaited debut memoir about the convergence of parenthood and technology from the beloved New York Times critic. In 2016, when Amanda arrived at the New York Times to become its correspondent for internet culture, a colleague asked her a question that sounded like a riddle: "On the internet, how do you know what's really real?" He had been looking for a literal answer, but Amanda recognized the question as something more profound, an irresolvable provocation that defines the experience of life in the digital age. For more than a decade, Amanda has been on the reality beat, living the contradictions of the internet even as she has tried to make sense of them. But when she discovered she was pregnant with her first child, who later received a prenatal diagnosis of Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome -- a genetic disorder -- she was unexpectedly rattled by a digital identity crisis all her own, vulnerable to the world of apps, gadgets, bloggers, online forums, and advertisers, all closing in, telling her what to do and how to feel. They promised that her new life -- and by extension, her child's -- would be so much better if she bought this or that, tried this or that. As the internet sought to remap her body and her mind, Amanda's guiding question became ever more urgent: what is "real life" when creating a life? Second Life is a trenchant look at parenting in early 21st-century America, when humans stopped being raised by villages or even families but rather by a constant onslaught of information. It is a funny, heartbreaking, and surreal examination of fertility apps, the history of ultrasound technologies, prenatal genetic testing, rare disease Facebook groups, baby memes, cultural representations of parenting, gender reveal videos, trendy sleep gurus, "freebirth" influencers, mommy marketers, culminating in a polemic on how to conceive of a real life in the digital age. Page by page, Amanda reveals the unspoken ways that our lives are being fractured and reconstituted by technology, all through the exacting lens of her intensely personal story"--
