Their social decline is even more visible due to alcoholism and unemployment. While one of them has died, the others just live their lives. Kroske shows his protagonists with dignity and emphasizes their struggle against neglect and the loneliness inscribed in their faces. The uproar at that time was replaced by the hectic electoral campaign in the spring of 1990. Nightly conversations with three street sweepers, Gabi, Henry and Stefan, whose life took place between children’s homes and prison, are dominated by hopelessness and broken self-confidence, but one can also feel a keen sense for the changes in the social and political climates in East Germany. In the meantime, they had given up their cleaning jobs and lost contact with each other. They struggle to get by, and their lives take place between their apartments, pubs and social welfare offices. Through parallel montage, the director brings his three protagonists together once again and establishes a connection between past and present through quotes from his 1990 documentary film Sweep It Up, exploring what happened to their fears and hopes. Five resettled members of the Weimar underground punk scene in East Germany plan an exceptional art project that they call White Line. They will paint a white line that encircles the west side of the Berlin Wall as a political statement to the normalization of the existence of the Wall in the West. While the concrete Wall remained gray and austere on the east side, the west side had been colorfully painted by artists, turning it into a tourist attraction. The five artists believe that this obscures the meaning of the Wall as a deadly and dangerous border that divides a city and a country. The documentary tries to reconstruct this unusual art project that was interrupted by East German border guards who took one of the artists through an almost invisible Wall door to the East where he was imprisoned. The artists hadn’t considered that the actual border ran about 9-13 ft on East German territory, placing the “west side” of the Wall on GDR soil. But how did the East German guards know about their project?
