Crackdown : surviving and resisting the war on drugs / by Mullins, Garth,author.;
"Garth Mullins was born partially blind and with Albinism into a world too bright for him to fully see and too unforgiving to fully accept him. Growing up, he was often bullied, by both students and teachers, who mocked his appearance and trivialized his disability. But Garth found strength and purpose in anti-fascist activism and punk rock, a scene that accepted him for who he was and offered an escape from the malignant drudgery of his suburban Vancouver neighbourhood. He also found solace in heroin, spurring an addiction that would span three decades. Garth's own experiences as a heroin user, complete with dope sickness, incarceration and overdose, is a common story for those struggling with heroin and opioid addictions. And for Garth, it was this realization, while fighting his addiction, that led him to drug activism. He had seen first-hand the failure of abstinence-based recovery programs, the fatal threat posed by unsafe drug supplies, the over-representation of drug users, particularly Black and Indigenous users, in jails and prisons. And he saw that far from the government being successful in its attempt to curb drug use, its war against drugs had been a deadly failure. Weaving together Garth's raw and intimate account of his own addiction with the broader issues and history surrounding drug treatment and policy, Crackdown challenges the received wisdom of how best to treat addiction and ensure the safety of drug users."--

Golem girl : a memoir / by Lehrer, Riva,1958-author.;
"What do we sacrifice in the pursuit of normalcy? And what becomes possible when we embrace monstrosity? In 1958, Riva is one of the first children born with spina bifida to survive. Her parents and doctors are determined to "fix" her, sending the message over and over again that she is broken. That she will never have a job, a romantic relationship, or an independent life. Enduring countless medical interventions, Riva tries her best to be a good girl and a good patient in the quest to be cured. Everything changes when, as an adult, Riva is invited to join a group of artists, writers, and performers who are building Disability Culture. Their work is daring, edgy, funny, and dark; it rejects tropes that define disabled people as pathetic, frightening, or worthless. They insist that disability is an opportunity for creativity and resistance. Emboldened, Riva asks if she can paint their portraits--an intimate and collaborative process that will transform the way she sees herself, others, and the world. With each portrait, and each person's story, the myths she's been told her whole life--about her body, her sexuality, and the value of normalcy--begin to crumble. Written with the vivid, cinematic prose of a visual artist, and the love and playfulness that defines all of Riva's work, Golem Girl is an extraordinary story of survival and creativity. With the author's magnificent portraits featured throughout, this memoir invites us to stretch ourselves toward a world where bodies flow between all possible forms of what it is to be human"--

Stuff mom never told you : the feminist past, present, and future / by Reese, Anney,author.; McVey, Samantha,author.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 229-235)."The concept of feminism has evolved and changed so much over the last few decades that it can be confusing for people to keep up. Luckily, Anney Reese and Samantha McVey break it all down every week on their popular iHeart podcast, Stuff Mom Never Told You. In this book -- their first -- they explore the history, strategy, and emotion that went into several milestones and emergent issues of the recent feminist movement. Starting with Billie Jean King's famous "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match, they also talk about the Civil Rights movement and the women who helped shape it; the disturbing prevalence of major backlogs in rape kit testing; how LGBTQ rights and women's right intersect; and how women have been critical to the advancement of disability rights, and more. Written with a sharp tongue, an infectious curiosity, and a deeply empathetic voice, Reese and McVey show the true breadth of what feminism can stand for, what it can achieve, and whom it can help lift up"--
