Confessions A Novel [electronic resource] : by Airey, Catherine.aut; cloudLibrary;
"Confessions is a remarkable debut. A complex and compulsive read that unravels the intricate twists and revelations among three generations of women with elegance and urgency." —Miranda Cowley Heller, author of The Paper Palace For fans of The Goldfinch and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, a mesmerizing and absorbing debut that follows three generations of women from New York to rural Ireland and back again. New York City, late September 2001. The walls of the city are papered over with photos of the missing. Cora Brady’s father is there, the poster she made taped to columns and bridges. When a letter arrives from an aunt she didn’t know existed in Ireland with the offer of a new life, the name jogs a memory: an old videocassette game Cora used to play as a child where two sisters must save the students of a mysterious boarding school. County Donegal, 1974. An eclectic group of artists known as the Screamers arrives in Burtonport and moves into the old schoolhouse down the road from where Róisín lives with her older sister Máire. Alternately kind and cruel, brilliant artist Máire is a mystery to Róisín, as is Máire’s relationship with the boy next door, Michael. When the Screamers look to hire an artist in residence, Róisín enlists Michael’s help to get Máire the job, setting in motion a chain of events that will put an ocean between the sisters and threaten to tear them apart forever. Burtonport, 2018. Lyca Brady lives in a sprawling old house with her mother, Cora, and great aunt, Ro. Abortion has just been legalized in Ireland, and Lyca is struggling to find herself outside her mother’s activism. An unexpected message from a childhood friend sends Lyca searching her house’s mysterious attic, with its strange collection of old medical equipment, piles of paperwork, and dusty boxes of ancient video games. There, she unearths secrets hidden for decades—secrets perhaps better left unknown. Catherine Airey’s haunting debut spins a mesmerizing story of family and fate, survival and revelation, examining the irresistible gravity of the past—how it endures through generations, pervasively present even when buried or forgotten.

The pairing : a novel / by McQuiston, Casey,author.;
"Theo and Kit have been a lot of things: childhood best friends, crushes, in love, and now estranged exes. After a brutal breakup on the transatlantic flight to their dream European food and wine tour, they exited each other's lives once and for all. Time apart has done them good. Theo has found confidence as a hustling bartender by night and aspiring sommelier by day, with a long roster of casual lovers. Kit, who never returned to America, graduated as the reigning sex god of his pastry school class and now bakes at one of the finest restaurants in Paris. Sure, nothing really compares to what they had, and life stretches out long and lonely ahead of them, but -- yeah. It's in the past. All that remains is the unused voucher for the European tour that never happened, good for 48 months after its original date and about to expire. Four years later, it seems like a great idea to finally take the trip. Solo. Separately. It's not until they board the tour bus that they discover they've both accidentally had the exact same idea, and now they're trapped with each other for three weeks of stunning views, luscious flavors, and the most romantic cities of France, Spain, and Italy. It's fine. There's nothing left between them. So much nothing that, when Theo suggests a friendly wager to see who can sleep with their hot Italian tour guide first, Kit is totally game. And why stop there? Why not a full-on European hookup competition? But sometimes a taste of everything only makes you crave what you can't have"--

The Blonde Dies First [electronic resource] : by Wellington, Joelle.aut; cloudLibrary;
A group of friends fight to choose their own fates in this trope-savvy, self-referential young adult thriller from the acclaimed author of Their Vicious Games, about a demonic force that acts according to horror movie rules in the spirit of the Scream movies. Devon is always being left behind by her genius twin sister, Drew. At this point, it’s a fact of life. But Devon has one last plan before Drew leaves for college a whole year early—The Best Summer Ever. After committing to the bit a little too much, the twins and their chaotic circle of friends learn why you don’t ever mess with a Ouija board if you want to actually survive the Best Summer Ever, and soon find themselves being hunted down by…a demon? But while there’s no mistaking the creeping, venomous figure is not from around here, their method doesn’t feel very demonic at all. In fact, it’s downright human—going after them in typical slasher movie kill order. And that means Devon, the blonde, is up first and her decade-long crush, Yaya, is the Final Girl who must kill or be killed to end the cycle. Devon has never liked playing by anyone else’s rules though, not even a demon’s, and the longer this goes on, the more she feels Drew and Yaya slipping away from her even as she tries to help them all survive. Can they use their horror movie knowledge to flip the script and become the hunters instead of the hunted? Or will their best summer ever be their last?

Beyond the rink : behind the images of residential school hockey / by Giancarlo, Alexandra,author.; Forsyth, Janice(Researcher of Indigenous sports),author.; Te Hiwi, Braden,author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index."In 1951, after winning the Thunder Bay district championship, the Sioux Lookout Black Hawks hockey team from Pelican Lake Indian Residential School embarked on a whirlwind promotional tour through Ottawa and Toronto. They were accompanied by a professional photographer from the National Film Board's Still Photography Division, who documented the experience. The tour was intended to demonstrate the success of the residential school system to the broader Canadian public and introduce the Black Hawks to "civilizing" activities that showed the ideals and benefits of assimilating into Canadian society. The tour left a complex legacy. For some of the boys, it was the beginning of a lifelong love of hockey. But, at the same time, playing hockey became less about the sport and more about escaping the brutal living conditions and abuse at the residential school. In Beyond the Rink, Behind the Image, Alexandra Giancarlo, Janice Forsyth, and Braden Te Hiwi collaborate with three surviving team members -- Kelly Bull, Chris Cromarty, and David Wesley -- to share their stories behind the 1951 tour photos. This book recontextualizes and repatriates photos from the tour and from their everyday lives at school, bringing together Indigenous studies and visual sociology to reveal the complicated role of sports in residential school histories. Accessible and moving, the Survivors' stories commemorate the team's stellar hockey record and athletic prowess while exposing important truths about "Canada's Game" and how it shaped ideas about the nation. By considering their past, the Survivors imagine a better way forward not just for themselves, their families, and their communities, but for Canada as a whole"--

Real self-care : a transformative program for redefining wellness (crystals, cleanses, and bubble baths not included) / by Lakshmin, Pooja,author.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 249-253)."From women's mental health specialist and New York Times contributor Pooja Lakshmin, MD, comes a long-overdue reckoning with the contradictions of the wellness industry and a paradigm-shifting program for practicing real self-care that will empower, uplift, and maybe even start a revolution. You may have noticed that it's nearly impossible to go even a couple days without coming across the term self-care. A word that encompasses any number of lifestyle choices and products -- from juice cleanses to yoga workshops to luxury bamboo sheets-self-care has exploded in our collective consciousness as a panacea for practically all of women's problems. Board-certified psychiatrist Dr. Pooja Lakshmin finds this cultural embrace of self-care incomplete at best and manipulative at worst. Fixing your troubles isn't as simple as buying a new day planner or signing up for a meditation class. These faux self-care practices keep us looking outward -- comparing ourselves with others or striving for a certain type of perfection. Even worse, they exonerate an oppressive social system that has betrayed women and minorities. Real self-care, in contrast, is an internal, self-reflective process that involves making difficult decisions in line with our values, and when we practice it, we shift our relationships, our workplaces, and even our broken systems. In real self-care, Lakshmin helps readers understand what a real practice of caring for yourself could -- and does -- look like. Using case studies from her practice, clinical research, and the down-to-earth style that she's become known for, Lakshmin provides a step-by-step program for real and sustainable change and solace. Packed with actionable strategies to deal with common problems, Real self-care is a complete roadmap for women to set boundaries and move past guilt, treat themselves with compassion, get closer to themselves, and assert their power. The result -- having ownership over one's own life -- is nothing less than a personal and social revolution"--
