The boy from Buzwah : a life in Indian education / by King, Cecil O.,1932-author.;
"Cecil King's remarkable memoir, from humble beginnings on a reservation to his unparalleled legacy to ensure Indian Control of Indian Education in Canada. Cecil King grew up in the small settlement of Buzwah, Ontario, situated on Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve on Manitoulin Island. King shares memories of life on the reserve in the 1930s and '40s and describes his experiences attending Buzwah Indian Day School and St. Charles Garnier Residential School. But after furthering his education, King returned home to Buzwah as a teacher. He quickly became disillusioned with the Ontario curriculum and how inadequately it resonated with on-reserve youth and the realities of Indigenous life. It was then that King began his unparalleled legacy to ensure Indian Control of Indian Education in Canada. Over his sixty-year career in education, he would found the Indian Teacher Education Program at the University of Saskatchewan, become the first director of the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program at Queen's University, and develop Ojibwe language courses across North America."--

Narrated by Andrew Binks.George Patterson laced up with the newly christened Toronto Maple Leafs on February 17, 1927, unaware he would score his first NHL goal that night, let alone the first goal in the history of the team. He would go on to play for the Montreal Canadians. Then, he would become a star for the wild New York Americans - a team founded and owned by a gangster and rum-runner. Patterson would go on to be a founding player with the AHL and then return home to Kingston where a promising coaching and officiating career was destroyed by scandal. Along the way as the Leafs turned their backs on their own past, Patterson faded into the shadows of hockey history.E.DVD ; widescreen presentation ; Dolby Digital 5.1.

A boy in winter / by Seiffert, Rachel,author.;
"From the award-winning author of the Booker Prize-short-listed The dark room, a startling portrait of the Nazis' arrival in Ukraine as they move to implement the final solution. Otto Pohl, an engineer overseeing construction of a German road in Ukraine, awakens to the unexpected sight of SS men herding hundreds of Jews into an old brick factory. Inside the factory, Ephraim anxiously scans the growing crowd, looking for his two sons. As anxious questions swirl around him -- 'Where are they taking us? How long will we be gone?' -- he can't quell the suspicion that it would be just like his oldest son to hole up somewhere instead of lining up for the Germans, and just like his youngest to follow. Yasia, a farmer's daughter who has come into town to sell produce, sees two young boys slinking through the shadows of the deserted streets and decides to offer them shelter. As these lives become more and more intertwined -- Rachel Seiffert's prose rich with a rare compassion, courage, and emotional depth, an unflinching story is told: of survival, of conflicting senses of duty, of the oppressive power of fear and the possibility of courage in the face of terror"--

Angry queer Somali boy : a complicated memoir / by Ali, Mohamed Abdulkarim,1985-author.;
Includes bibliographical references."Writing from a homeless shelter in downtown Toronto, Mohamed "Mo" Ali chronicles how he ended up there in this powerful and often irreverent memoir of exile, addiction, and racism. Kidnapped by his father on the eve of Somalia's societal implosion, Ali was taken first to the Netherlands by his stepmother, and then on to Canada. With its promise of freedom, opportunity, and multiculturalism, his new home seemed to offer a new lease on life. But unable to fit in, he turned to partying and drugs. Interwoven with world history and sociopolitical commentary on Somalia, Canada, and Europe, the story of this gay Muslim immigrant is told with tenderness in a refreshing and welcome new voice."--
