Travel thru history. [videorecording] / by TMW Media Group,distributor.;
In this episode of Travel Thru History we visit a city in the Southeastern US that you can hear from miles away. It's rightfully called Music City but you know it as Nashville, Tennessee. We dig deep into the city's past and find that there's more than just a vibrant music scene. There's a melody of Civil War history. First, we take in the magnificent Belmont Mansion. This thirty-six room summer home lies on the campus of Belmont University and is now a museum that boasts the incredible art collection of the original owners. Then we head to the home of the hero of the Battle of New Orleans, 7th US President Andrew Jackson's Tennessee mansion, known as The Hermitage. Next, we learn why Nashville is called the "Athens of the South." And every Athens needs its Parthenon, and Nashville doesn't disappoint. They have an exact replica of the Parthenon built in Ancient Greece. Then we're trekking uphill to the ruins of Fort Negley. Nashville was a city divided as we learn how this star-shaped fort was occupied during the Civil War. We couldn't visit Nashville without stopping by the Grand Ole Opry, the show that made country music famous!E.DVD.

Mother of god : a novel / by Peters, Sara,1982-author.;
"A landmark literary novel of psychological horror from the author of I Become a Delight to My Enemies. Marlene calls herself a psychic wound healer, but really, her paranormal abilities are restricted to visions. In fact, they're restricted to visions of just one person. Her mother, Darlene. The visions started when Marlene was nine: a symbol and a symptom of an unfathomably deep maternal connection; a mental and emotional escape hatch; evidence of a bond so intense that a rupture was perhaps inevitable. And yet, years of estrangement later, when Marlene receives a message from Darlene asking her to come home, she packs up her life in Vancouver and drives across the country to small-town Nova Scotia. It's a trip fraught with vivid, oppressive memories--of childhood betrayals, the distant decades that followed, and the malevolent presence of Darlene's on-again-off-again boyfriend, Ed. Still, the opportunity is overwhelming--the chance to become the centres of each other's universes once again. But when she arrives, Darlene is not where she should be. Figures from the past materialize as reality's thin membrane begins to give way, and Marlene is forced to confront the incomprehensible as she is sent down a path of terrors, to the very end of human feeling, to the very end of her mind. Sinister and surreal, ghastly and full of grace, Mother of God is a monumental step forward from one of the great writers of her generation."--

Not here : why American democracy is eroding and how Canada can protect itself / by Goodman, Rob,author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index."What does it mean to live beside an eroding democracy? As this powerful and timely book argues, that question will define the next generation of Canadian politics. As a congressional staffer in the United States, Rob Goodman watched firsthand as a rising authoritarian movement disenfranchised voters, sabotaged institutions, and brought America to the brink of a coup. Now, as a political theorist who makes his home in Canada, he has an urgent warning for his adopted country: The same forces that have upended democracy in America and around the world are on the move in Canada, too. But we can protect our democracy by drawing on a set of political, cultural, and historical resources that are distinctly of this place. In Not Here, Goodman outlines four such resources. First, the rejection of the dangerous idea of one "real" Canadian people. Second, the refusal of political charisma and founder-worship. Third, a set of social programs--embattled but still standing--that empower neighbours to see one another as equals. And fourth, Canada's longstanding search for an identity separate from the great power with which it shares a continent. Today, that great power is a democracy in decline, and so defending what makes Canada distinct matters more now than ever before. Canadian difference is not a curiosity, a luxury good, or a vanity item. It is a democratic immune system. Laying bare the historical roots of today's politics and making an urgent case for action, Not Here is a roadmap for safeguarding a democracy under unprecedented threat."--
