From the USA TODAY and nationally bestselling author of Darling Rose Gold comes a dark, suspenseful novel about a hotelier in New England planning a reunion with his oldest friends, the founding members of a campus film club devoted to Alfred Hitchcock. Alfred Smettle is not your average Hitchcock fan. He is the founder, owner, and manager of The Hitchcock Hotel, a sprawling Victorian house in the White Mountains dedicated to the Master of Suspense. There, Alfred offers his guests round-the-clock film screenings, movie props and memorabilia in every room, plus an aviary with fifty crows. To celebrate the hotel’s first anniversary, he invites his former best friends from his college Film Club for a reunion. He hasn’t spoken to any of them in sixteen years, not after what happened. But who better than them to appreciate Alfred’s creation? And to help him finish it. After all, no Hitchcock set is complete without a body.

- Chilean Experiences in East German Cinema. by Scheumann, Gerhard,film director.; Jordan, Günter,film director.; Steinheisser, Jürgen,film director.; Ackermann, Rainer,film director.; Milanov, Valentin,film director.; Heynowski, Walter,film director.; DEFA Film Library (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by DEFA Film Library in 1974.In the 1970s, the East German DEFA Studios responded to the military coup in Chile in 1973. They produced films about Chile and Chilean exiles that were not simply reactions to the political upheavals or demonstrations of solidarity with the Chilean people. In many cases, Chilean artists were directly involved in the creation of these films or were central to the film’s story. This program of six short documentaries features Chilean music (Aparcoa, 1977) and tells daily stories of Chilean exiles in their new East German homeland (A Chilean Wedding, 1977; Copihuito, 1977). The three films by the legendary H&S Studio, a private East German film group, are part of their 10-film Chilean Cycle (1974-1985). They use rare footage to picture the situation at the presidential palace La Moneda on September 11, 1973, the day of the military coup (Fellow Citizens, 1974), and investigate dictator Pinochet’s politics (Psalm 18, 1974) and underground resistance (Money Troubles, 1975).Mode of access: World Wide Web.

- M()nster : a novel / by Bydlowska, Jowita,author.;
"Monster is a shattering, feminist manifesto exploring sexual awakening, motherhood, immigrant trauma, and the power of female rage. Yoveeta is angry. But her rage is quiet, internal, festering inside and forming a mysterious creation that she refers to as "Monster", something that began as longing when she lost her first home, country, and language, and that kept on growing as she experienced sexual and romantic trauma. Her quest for home led her into a toxic relationship with Voytek, an older, former professor and accomplished Polish writer who fathered her daughter, Ruby, and who gave her a house that finally made her feel as if she landed somewhere safe. But their marriage was anything but safe, with Voytek's penchant for infidelity and unrelenting gaslighting. As her relationship with her husband crumbles into separation, Yoveeta develops a new, motivating force to fight for her home and future. The invigorating new love gives her the courage to leave her toxic situation and come up with an ultimate and drastic solution, carried out with the help of her new accomplice."--

- Manufacturing Chaos. by Pemberton, Justin,film director.; Farrier, David,actor.; Video Project (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
David FarrierOriginally produced by Video Project in 2022.MANUFACTURING CHAOS offers a survey on the recent rise of disinformation from a global perspective, looking at how changes in the way we receive information and connect with one another have influenced such events as Brexit, COVID-19, the 2016 election, Qanon, "deepfakes" and artificial intelligence, and more. Once a site of what many considered to be utopic potential, the primacy of social media platforms on the internet has rapidly turned it into a ready vehicle for disinformation. The film examines how the convergence of rising inequality, our increasing reliance on the online world, combined with new tools for manipulation, has enabled the creation of parallel realities with dramatic social consequences. People living within the same community can now perceive the world in vastly different ways, depending on where they hang out online. The power to manipulate narratives and herd people toward falsehood raises the stakes so high that peace and cooperation are becoming increasingly fragile, the goal of disinformation.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Willa Knox has always prided herself on being the embodiment of responsibility for her family. Which is why it's so unnerving that she's arrived at middle age with nothing to show for her hard work and dedication but a stack of unpaid bills and an inherited brick home in Vineland, New Jersey, that is literally falling apart. The magazine where she worked has folded, and the college where her husband had tenure has closed. The dilapidated house is also home to her ailing and cantankerous Greek father-in-law and her two grown children: her stubborn, free-spirited daughter, Tig, and her dutiful debt-ridden, ivy educated son, Zeke, who has arrived with his unplanned baby in the wake of a life-shattering development. In an act of desperation, Willa begins to investigate the history of her home, hoping that the local historical preservation society might take an interest and provide funding for its direly needed repairs. Through her research into Vineland's past and its creation as a Utopian community, she discovers a kindred spirit from the 1880s, Thatcher Greenwood.

- The meaning of beer : how our pursuit of the perfect pint built the world / by Garrett, Jonny,author.;
Includes bibliographical references (page 299) and index."What's the oldest and most consumed alcoholic beverage on earth? Beer, of course. And it might just be one of our more important inventions. Since its creation thirteen thousand years ago, our love of beer has shaped everything from religious ceremonies to advertising, and architecture to bioengineering. The people who built the pyramids were paid in ale; the first fridge was built for beer, not food; bacteria was discovered while investigating sour beer; Germany's beer halls hosted Hitler's rise to power; and brewer's yeast may yet be the answer to climate change. In The Meaning of Beer, award-winning beer writer Jonny Garrett tells the stories of these incredible human moments and inventions, taking readers to some of the best-known beer destinations in the world -- Munich and Oktoberfest, Carlsberg Brewery's historic laboratory, St. Louis and the home of Budweiser -- as well as those lesser known, from a five-thousand-year-old brewery in the Egyptian desert to Arctic Svalbard, home to the world's most northerly pub. Ultimately, this is not a book about how we made beer, but how beer made us"--
