Unmasked : my life solving America's cold cases / by Holes, Paul,author.; Fisher, Robin Gaby,author.;
"From the detective who found The Golden State Killer, a memoir of investigating America's toughest cold cases and the rewards--and toll--of a life solving crime. I order another bourbon, neat. This is the drink that will flip the switch. I don't even know how I got here, to this place, to this point. Something is happening to me lately. I'm drinking too much. My sheets are soaking wet when I wake up from nightmares of decaying corpses. I order another drink and swig it, trying to forget about the latest case I can't shake. Crime-solving for me is more complex than the challenge of the hunt, or the process of piecing together a scientific puzzle. The thought of good people suffering drives me, for better or worse, to the point of obsession. People always ask how I am able to detach from the horrors of my work. Part of it is an innate capacity to compartmentalize; the rest is experience and exposure, and I've had plenty of both. But I had always taken pride in the fact that I can keep my feelings locked up to get the job done. It's only been recently that it feels like all that suppressed darkness is beginning to seep out. When I look back at my long career, there is a lot I am proud of. I have caught some of the most notorious killers of the twenty-first century and brought justice and closure for their victims and families. I want to tell you about a lifetime solving these cold cases, from Laci Peterson to Jaycee Dugard to the Pittsburg homicides to, yes, my twenty-year-long hunt for the Golden State Killer. But a deeper question eats at me as I ask myself, at what cost? I have sacrificed relationships, joy-even fatherhood-because the pursuit of evil always came first. Did I make the right choice? It's something I grapple with every day. Yet as I stand in the spot where a young girl took her last breath, as I look into the eyes of her family, I know that, for me, there has never been a choice. "I don't know if I can solve your case," I whisper. "But I promise I will do my best." It is a promise I know I can keep"--

Zara's dead / by Butala, Sharon,1940-author.;
"Fiona Lychenko--now a woman in her late sixties--spent years researching the death of her high school classmate Zara Stanley, who was brutally murdered in the early sixties, at the age of twenty. Determined to solve the crime--something not even the police were able to do, Fiona interviewed everyone she could in her hometown of Ripley, but to no avail: every trail led to the same dead end. She even published her findings in a book, hoping it would lead to anonymous clues from readers and outliers, but to no avail. Now, a decade later, Fiona has finally given up hope that the real killer would ever be caught. That is, until a brown manila envelope turns up under the door of her Calgary condo, with one sheet of paper inside that has a set of numbers and letters on it--all cut out from newspapers and magazines. Suddenly, all of the old feelings return, and Fiona once again finds herself embroiled in the midst of a tangled controversy so intricate and delicate that one wrong move could unravel the whole thing. Based on the true story of the murder of Alexandra Wiwcharuk in 1961 in Saskatoon, Zara's Dead is the fictional retelling of a very real story, one that has captivated and eluded answers for decades."--

Lorna Watson, Max Brown, Jerry Iwu, Miranda Raison, Ami Metcalf.From the makers of Father Brown and Shakespeare and Hathaway, Private Investigators comes a light-hearted murder mystery series. It's the 1960s and police forensics are rudimentary. Luckily the residents of Great Slaughter, nestled deep in the British countryside, have a secret weapon. Sister Boniface. This nun might be predisposed to forgive but she's also one hell of an amateur detective. If there's evidence to be found, Boniface will find it, with a little help from dashing maverick DI Sam Gillespie and buttoned-up Bermudan Ds Felix Livingstone, who's horrified to be stuck in the eccentric world of Great Slaughter. A corpse is found stuffed inside a dummy at the local fair; tragedy hits a visiting TV crew, and a gruesome discovery is made in Edie's beloved allotment plot. It's down to Siste Boniface, and a few hasty Hail Marys, to save the day.14A.Subtitled for the deaf and hard-of-hearing (SDH).DVD ; wide screen presentation ; 5.1 surround.

A good month for murder : the inside story of a homicide squad / by Wilber, Del Quentin,author.;
"Twelve homicides, three police-involved shootings and a furious hunt for an especially brutal killer--February 2013 was a good month for murder in suburban Washington, D.C. After gaining unparalleled access to the homicide unit in Prince George's County, which borders the nation's capital, Del Quentin Wilber begins shadowing the talented, often quirky detectives who get the call when a body falls. He rides with a hard-charging investigator who pops diet pills while devouring cheeseburgers; he stands over a corpse with a hulking investigator who works security at a cemetery to earn extra money; he spends hours in the interrogation room--a.k.a. "the box"--with a chain-smoking vegan determined to solve the most difficult case of his career. And then, after a quiet couple of months, all hell breaks loose: suddenly every detective in the squad is working day and night to solve one shooting and stabbing after another. In particular, the entire unit becomes obsessed with a "red ball," a high-profile case involving a 17-year-old honor student attacked by a gunman who kicked down the door to her house and murdered her in her bed. Murder is the police investigator's ultimate crucible: to solve a killing, a detective must speak for the dead. More than any recent book, A Good Month for Murder shows what it takes to succeed when the stakes couldn't possibly be higher"--
