In August 1969, nearly half a million people gathered at a farm in upstate New York to hear music. What happened over the next three days, however, was far more than a concert. It would become a legendary event, one that would define a generation and mark the end of one of the most turbulent decades in modern history. Occurring just weeks after an American set foot on the moon, the Woodstock music festival took place against a backdrop of a nation in conflict over sexual politics, civil rights and the Vietnam War. A sense of an America in transition -- a handoff of the country between generations with far different values and ideals -- was tangibly present at what promoters billed as "An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace and Music." Woodstock turns the lens back at the audience, at the swarming, impromptu city that grew up overnight on a few acres of farm land. In this episode of Travel Thru History we visit a city in the Southeastern US that you can hear from miles away. It's rightfully called Music City but you know it as Nashville, Tennessee. We dig deep into the city's past and find that there's more than just a vibrant music scene. There's a melody of Civil War history. First, we take in the magnificent Belmont Mansion. This thirty-six room summer home lies on the campus of Belmont University and is now a museum that boasts the incredible art collection of the original owners. Then we head to the home of the hero of the Battle of New Orleans, 7th US President Andrew Jackson's Tennessee mansion, known as The Hermitage. Next, we learn why Nashville is called the "Athens of the South." And every Athens needs its Parthenon, and Nashville doesn't disappoint. They have an exact replica of the Parthenon built in Ancient Greece. Then we're trekking uphill to the ruins of Fort Negley. Nashville was a city divided as we learn how this star-shaped fort was occupied during the Civil War. We couldn't visit Nashville without stopping by the Grand Ole Opry, the show that made country music famous!E.DVD.

The Great Lakes watershed is one of the world's largest freshwater ecosystems. 4,000 kilometers of coastline and are home to more than 3,500 plant and animal species. Each of the lakes' ecosystems has a unique inter-relationship with wildlife. Beavers and wolves jointly control the purity and flow of water into Lake Superior. Loons hunt fish in its clear waters. Lake Michigan has the world's largest freshwater sand dunes and the endangered piping plover. Scientists work to prevent Michigan River's invasive silver carp from entering this ecosystem. Lake Huron has one of the largest concentrations of shipwrecks in the world. Lake Erie is a bi-annual stopping point for millions of migrating birds. Pelee Island shores shelter the endangered blue racer snake. Niagara Falls, the most powerful waterfall in the world, drains the lake. Lake Ontario has the world's largest population of cormorants. Huge amounts of clean water enter it from the Ottawa River (the 6th of the Great Lakes). In the river's vast underwater cave system, millions of mussels filter the water. It will take 200 years for a drop of water to flow from the source of Lake Superior to the mouth of the St. Lawrence River, the largest estuary on Earth.E.DVD.
