- Augusto Pinochet, Salvador AllendeOriginally produced by DEFA Film Library in 1975.Parliamentary Elections in Chile on March 4, 1973: Reactionary forces, financially backed by the American CIA and international cooperation, attempt to gain a two-thirds majority in the National Congress, which would allow them to impeach President Salvador Allende, who was democratically elected for a six-year term in 1970. These efforts by the right-wing forces and nationalists, a so-called White Coup, seemed to be the last legal way for them to gain governmental power. When this coup fails, the Chilean reactionaries resort to an armed coup, and on September 11, 1973 they successfully launch a military-fascist government.The documentary uncovers the tactics nationalists and their allies used to change Chilean politics during the Allende government. Original footage, photos and audio are interwoven with quotes about the CIA’s role in Chile from major British newspapers, including the International Herald Tribune, Time and The Guardian.This release is the newly digitized original English version of the documentary that was distributed world-wide after the film came out in 1975. The English script was written and spoken by John Peet, a British journalist who defected to East Germany in 1950.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

When General Franco and his Fascists succeed in overthrowing the government, hundreds of thousands are forced to flee in a treacherous journey over the mountains to the French border. Among them is Roser, a pregnant young widow, who finds her life irreversibly intertwined with that of Victor Dalmau, an army doctor and the brother of her deceased love. In order to survive, the two must unite in a marriage neither of them wants, and together are sponsored by poet Pablo Neruda to embark on the SS Winnipeg along with 2,200 other refugees in search of a new life. As unlikely partners, they embrace exile and emigrate to Chile as the rest of Europe erupts in World War. Starting over on a new continent, their trials are just beginning. Over the course of their lives, they will face test after test. But they will also find joy as they wait patiently for a day when they are exiles no more, and will find friends in the most unlikely of places. Through it all, it is that hope of being reunited with their home that keeps them going. And in the end, they will find that home might have been closer than they thought all along"--

- The last million : Europe's displaced persons from World War to Cold War / by Nasaw, David,author.;
- Includes bibliographical references and index."In May of 1945, German forces surrendered to the Allied powers, effectively putting an end to World War II in Europe. But the aftershocks of this global military conflict did not cease with the signing of truces and peace treaties. Millions of lost and homeless POWs, slave laborers, political prisoners, and concentration camp survivors overwhelmed Germany, a country in complete disarray. British and American soldiers gathered the malnourished and desperate foreigners, and attempted to repatriate them to Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, and the USSR. But after exhaustive efforts, there remained over a million displaced persons who either refused to go home or, in the case of many, had no home to which to return. They would spend the next three to five years in displaced persons camps, divided by nationalities, temporary homelands in exile, with their own police forces, churches, schools, newspapers, and medical facilities. The international community couldn't agree on the fate of the Last Million, and after a year of fruitless debate and inaction, an International Refugee Organization was created to resettle them in lands suffering from labor shortages. But no nations were willing to accept the 200,000 to 250,000 Jewish men, women, and children who remained trapped in Germany. In 1948, the United States, among the last countries to accept anyone for resettlement, finally passed a Displaced Persons Bill - but as Cold War fears supplanted memories of WWII atrocities, the bill only granted visas to those who were reliably anti-communist, including thousands of former Nazi collaborators, Waffen-SS members, and war criminals, while barring the Jews who were suspected of being Communist sympathizers or agents because they had been recent residents of Soviet-dominated Poland. Only after the passage of the controversial UN resolution for the partition of Palestine and Israel's declaration of independence were the remaining Jewish survivors finally able to leave their displaced persons camps in Germany."--

- The Holocaust : an unfinished history / by Stone, Dan,1971-author.;
- Includes bibliographical references and index.The defining event of twentieth-century Europe-the extermination of millions of Jews-has been commemorated, institutionalised and embedded in our collective consciousness. But in this nuanced and perceptive new history, Dan Stone, Professor of Modern History and Director of the Holocaust Research Institute, contends that the true dimension of the horror wrought by the Nazis is inadvertently brushed aside in our current culture of commemoration. This is due in part to practical or conceptual challenges, such as the continent-wide scale of the crime and the multiplicity of sources in many languages; and in part to an unwillingness to confront the reality that the Holocaust could not have happened without the assistance of numerous non-Nazi states and agents. Structured around four themes-trauma, collaboration, genocidal fantasy and post-war consequences-The Holocaust demonstrates the genocidal logic of much European thinking in the wake of WWI, explores how the Holocaust's effects unfolded even after the liberation of the camps in 1945, and stresses the ways in which Europeans continue, even now, to draw on a reservoir of fascist vocabulary and imagery in times of crisis. It is a deeply researched and indispensable examination of a trauma that still reverberates today.

- "1939. Ansel Luxford has everything a man could want -- a law firm partnership in Minneapolis, a brilliant wife, a beautiful new baby. But he is consumed by his belief that the war in Europe will spread, despite the fact that the United States is neutral in the conflict. When he is offered an opportunity to move across the country to Washington, D.C., to join a clandestine team within the Treasury Department that is secretly trying to undermine Nazi Germany, he uproots his family overnight and takes on the challenge of a lifetime. To thwart the Nazis without firing a bullet, Ansel and his new team invent a powerful new kind of economic warfare. As the U.S. remains officially neutral, Ansel secretly crisscrosses the globe to broker backroom deals designed to cut off the German supply of gold; undertake a daring heist of intel suppressed by homegrown fascists within the American government; and spar with titans of industry like J.P. Morgan and the twentieth century's greatest economic mind, Britain's John Maynard Keynes. But money is a dangerous weapon, and Ansel's efforts will plunge him into a startling new world of espionage, peril, and deceit. The need for subterfuge extends to the home front when Ansel's wife takes a job with the FBI to hunt for spies within the government. And Ansel discovers that he might be closer to those spies than he could ever imagine"--

- In the name of humanity : the secret deal to end the Holocaust / by Wallace, Max,author.;
- Includes bibliographical references and index."Early in the morning of November 26, 1944, prisoners at Auschwitz heard a deafening explosion. Emerging from their barracks, they witnessed the crematoria--part of the largest killing machine in human history--come crashing down. Most assumed they had fallen victim to inmate sabotage and thousands gave a silent cheer. However, the Final Solution's most efficient murder apparatus had not been felled by Jews, but rather by the ruthless architect of mass genocide, SS chief Heinrich Himmler--an edict that has puzzled historians for more than six decades. Holocaust historian and New York Times bestselling author Max Wallace--a veteran interviewer for Steven Spielberg's Shoah Foundation--draws on an explosive cache of recently declassified documents and an account from the only living eyewitness to unravel the mystery. For the first time, he reveals an incredible story involving the secret negotiations of an unlikely trio--a former fascist President of Switzerland, a courageous Orthodox Jewish woman, and Himmler himself--to end the Holocaust, aided by clandestine Swedish and American intelligence efforts. He documents their efforts to deceive Himmler, successfully prevent the extermination of hundreds of thousands of Jews during the last months of the Second World War, and thwart Hitler's plan to take "every last Jew" down with the Reich. These are revelations that will help rewrite the history of the Holocaust and the Second World War."--

- Cracking the Nazi code : the untold story of Canada's greatest spy / by Bell, Jason(Professor of philosophy),author.;
- Includes bibliographical references and index."The thrilling true story of Canada's greatest spy, Agent A12. In public life, Nova Scotian Dr. Winthrop Bell was a wealthy businessman and Harvard philosophy professor. As MI6 Secret Agent A12, he dodged gunfire and shook pursuers to break open the emerging Nazi conspiracy in electrifying 1919 Berlin. Under cover as a Reuters reporter, he interviewed royalty, military informants, and intellectuals like Albert Einstein and Edith Stein. He followed clues to crack a deadly mystery and sounded the earliest warning of the Nazi plot for WWII. His reports went directly to the man known as C, the legendary founder of MI6, as well as to the prime ministers of Britain and Canada. But a powerful fascist politician quietly suppressed his alerts. Bell became a spy once again in the face of WWII. In 1939, he was the first to crack Hitler's deadliest secret code: the Holocaust. At that time the Führer was a popular politician who said he wanted peace. Could anyone believe Bell's shocking warning? Fighting an epic intelligence war from Ukraine, Russia, Poland and the Baltic to France, Germany, Canada and Washington, D.C., A12 was the real-life 007, waging a single-handed fight against madmen bent on destroying the world. Without Bell's astounding courage, the Nazis could have won the war. Cracking the Nazi Code is the first book to illuminate the exploits of Winthrop Bell, Agent A12."--
