Dark wire : the incredible true story of the largest sting operation ever / by Cox, Joseph(Journalist),author.;
Includes bibliographical references."Beginning in 2018, a powerful app for secure communications, called Anom, began to take root among drug dealers and other criminals. It had extraordinary safeguards to keep out prying eyes -- the power to quickly wipe data, voice-masking technology, and more. It was better than other apps popular among organized crime syndicates, except for one thing: it was secretly run by law enforcement. Over the next few years, the FBI, along with law enforcement partners in Australia and parts of Europe, got a front row seat to the global criminal underworld. They watched drug deals and hits being planned in real time, making arrests where they could without blowing their cover. For a period of years, some one hundred thousand criminals worldwide, including members of South American drug cartels, the Calabrian mafia, and the Chinese Triad, did their business in full view of the officers they were trying to evade. It was a sprawling global economy as efficient and interconnected as the legal one. But a surveillance operation like this couldn't last. It was too dangerous, too ethically fraught, too large. And it all ended in spectacular fashion. Dark Wire is more than the story of this enormous sting operation -- it shows the fundamental problems of policing in such a vast and high-speed economy. This is a caper for our modern world, where everyone is connected and no one is completely free"--

Beyond order : 12 more rules for life / by Peterson, Jordan B.,author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index."The highly anticipated sequel to the global bestseller 12 Rules for Life. In 12 Rules for Life, acclaimed public thinker and clinical psychologist Jordan B. Peterson offered an antidote to the chaos in our lives: eternal truths applied to modern anxieties. His insights have helped millions of readers and resonated powerfully around the world. Now in his long-awaited sequel, Peterson goes further, showing that part of life's meaning comes from reaching out into the domain beyond what we know, and adapting to an ever-transforming world. While an excess of chaos threatens us with uncertainty, an excess of order leads to a lack of curiosity and creative vitality. Beyond Order therefore calls on us to balance the two fundamental principles of reality--order and chaos--and reveals the profound meaning that can be found on the path that divides them. In times of instability and suffering, Peterson reminds us that there are sources of strength on which we can all draw: insights borrowed from psychology, philosophy, and humanity's greatest myths and stories. Drawing on the hard-won truths of ancient wisdom, as well as deeply personal lessons from his own life and clinical practice, Peterson offers twelve new principles to guide readers towards a more courageous, truthful, and meaningful life"--

Bloodlines of the Slave Trade. by Hancock, Markie,film director.; Video Project (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by Video Project in 2023.Examines the lives of two people whose only connection is a genetic link to John Armfield, one of the most notorious slave traders of the 1830s. Rodney Williams, who is Black, and Susanna Grannis, who is white, each trace their ancestry back to their distant ancestor, detailing the diverging paths their lineages took. While their relationship to this past is fundamentally different, and they never meet in the film, they both share in the telling of the horrific domestic slave trade and the ongoing reverberations of slavery.The film also navigates the lesser known "second middle passage" referred to as the "domestic slave trade." Starting in Alexandria, VA, where two of the wealthiest and most infamous slave traders of the mid-19th century were headquartered, Williams journeys along the Natchez Trace where in all likelihood his ancestors walked before him. In Alexandria, John Armfield and Isaac Franklin would either ship or march the enslaved down south to Mississippi or Louisiana for both future sale and brutal work on southern plantations. These cruel transactions involved separation from family members, long and arduous journeys chained together in coffles, and even more brutal working conditions once sold off in Natchez or New Orleans. His path along the trail illuminates the mechanisms and realities of chattel slavery, and illustrates the vast accumulation of wealth created by enslaved people, but held by slaveowners and benefitting their descendants.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Her space, her time : how trailblazing women scientists decoded the hidden universe / by Ghose, Shohini,author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index."Her Space, Her Time shares the stories of women in physics and astronomy whose work expanded scientific understanding yet whose accomplishments are largely overlooked--creating a thrilling account of scientific discovery, inspirational leadership and persistence in the face of overwhelming challenges. In shaping her narrative around the science that fascinated them and the social context in which they worked, award-winning quantum physicist Shohini Ghose champions these remarkable women's contributions, which loom even larger given the misogyny and discrimination they faced. Ghose's canvas stretches from the 19th century to the present and includes many women whose work led to Nobel Prizes that were ultimately awarded to men. Among this list of impressive scientists: Henrietta Leavitt and Margaret Burbidge, who helped discover the big bang and the cosmic calendar; Anigaduwagi (Cherokee) aerospace scientist Mary Golda Ross, who helped make the Moon landings possible; atom splitter Lise Meitner; Bibha Chowdhuri, who discovered two fundamental particles; and Harriet Brooks--a Canadian physicist whose impact on radioactivity research was compared to Marie Curie's, but who felt that marriage, not science, was the choice she had to make. Engaging and inspirational, Her Space, Her Time is threaded through with Ghose's own experiences in science--women in STEM still face the same kind of challenges her subjects encountered--and driven by the imperative to make the invisible visible, ensuring that the names of these women who pursued science against all odds will never be forgotten"--

Autocracy, Inc. : the dictators who want to run the world / by Applebaum, Anne,1964-author.;
Includes bibliographical references."From the Pulitzer-prize winning, New York Times bestselling author, an alarming account of how autocracies work together to undermine the democratic world, and how we should organize to defeat them. We think we know what an autocratic state looks like: There is an all-powerful leader at the top. He controls the police. The police threaten the people with violence. There are evil collaborators, and maybe some brave dissidents. But in the 21st century, that bears little resemblance to reality. Nowadays, autocracies are underpinned not by one dictator, but by sophisticated networks composed of kleptocratic financial structures, surveillance technologies, and professional propagandists, all of which operate across multiple regimes, from China to Russia to Iran. Corrupt companies in one country do business with corrupt companies in another. The police in one country can arm and train the police in another, and propagandists share resources and themes, pounding home the same messages about the weakness of democracy and the evil of America. International condemnation and economic sanctions cannot move the autocrats. Even popular opposition movements, from Venezuela to Hong Kong to Moscow, don't stand a chance. The members of Autocracy, Inc, aren't linked by a unifying ideology, like communism, but rather a common desire for power, wealth, and impunity. In this urgent treatise, which evokes George Kennan's essay calling for "containment" of the Soviet Union, Anne Applebaum calls for the democracies to fundamentally reorient their policies to fight a new kind of threat"--
