- All our relations : finding the path forward / by Talaga, Tanya,author.;
- Includes bibliographical references."Every single year in Canada, one-third of all deaths among Indigenous youth are due to suicide. Studies indicate youth between the ages of ten and nineteen, living on reserve, are five to six times more likely to commit suicide than their peers in the rest of the population. Suicide is a new behaviour for First Nations people. There is no record of any suicide epidemics prior to the establishment of the 130 residential schools across Canada. Bestselling and award-winning author Tanya Talaga argues that the aftershocks of cultural genocide have resulted in a disturbing rise in youth suicides in Indigenous communities in Canada and beyond. She examinees the tragic reality of children feeling so hopeless they want to die, of kids perishing in clusters, forming suicide pacts, or becoming romanced by the notion of dying - a phenomenon that experts call "suicidal ideation." She also looks at the rising global crisis, as evidenced by the high suicide rates among the Inuit of Greenland and Aboriginal youth in Australia. Finally, she documents suicide prevention strategies in Nunavut, Seabird Island, and Greenland; Facebook's development of AI software to actively link kids in crisis with mental health providers; and the push by First Nations leadership in Northern Ontario for a new national health strategy that could ultimately lead communities towards healing from the pain of suicide. Based on her Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy series, Tanya Talaga's 2018 Massey Lectures is a powerful call for action and justice for Indigenous communities and youth."--

- The Saturday Night Ghost Club / by Davidson, Craig,1976-author.;
- "A charismatic cast of misfits, losers, and bruisers animate this winning novel set in Niagara Falls, a.k.a. Cataract City--a slightly seedy, slightly magical, slightly haunted place, where seemingly ordinary lives are steeped in secrets, desires, troubled histories, and the occasional splash of mayhem. Like Ilium, New York, in the novels of Kurt Vonnegut, or Castle Rock, New England, in the fiction of Stephen King--or even Hawkins, Indiana, in the Netflix sensation Stranger Things, Cataract City is an invented world where lost innocence mingles with the darker shades and sharper corners of humanity. Saturday Night Ghost Club is a short, irresistible, and bittersweet coming-of-age story about a small group of kids who, under the leadership of an eccentric uncle, spend one summer investigating the validity of local ghost stories and macabre urban myths--in almost every instance getting in way over their heads. With warmth, skill, and striking, cinematic imagery, and a rare gift for conjuring totally original, unexpected, and unforgettable set pieces and tableaus that strike the reader as immediately iconic--Davidson draws us into his gritty world, reminding us that life's strange intensity and occasional magic is all around us."--

- Live life in crescendo : your most important work is always ahead of you / by Covey, Stephen R.,author.; Haller, Cynthia Covey,author.;
- Includes bibliographical references."The inspirational, encouraging final book from the legendary leadership expert Stephen R. Covey, internationally bestselling author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Stephen R. Covey spent his long and storied career inspiring millions of individuals to make their lives more effective, compassionate, and meaningful. Near the end of his life, Covey felt there was a final component to his work: How to live your best life no matter your age? How to best respond to life-challenging experiences? How to approach the challenges and opportunities of middle to later life - like raising children, caring for your parents, leading and inspiring others, staying on top of your career, contributing to your community, and what follows next? Live Life in Crescendo is Covey's answer to these questions, outlining his vision for those in the prime of life, whatever age you may be. Covey urges all to "live life in crescendo," continually growing in contribution, learning, and influence. In the same way that music builds on the previous notes, life too, builds on the past and unfolds in the future. This crescendo mentality urges you to use whatever you have - your time, talents, resources, gifts, passion, money, and influence--to enrich the lives of people around you, including your family, neighborhood, community, and the world. Cowritten with his daughter, Cynthia Covey Haller, and published posthumously, Live Life in Crescendo is a life-changing and life-affirming book that befits the generosity and wisdom of the late Stephen R. Covey."--|cProvided by publisher.

- The duel : Diefenbaker, Pearson and the making of modern Canada / by Ibbitson, John,author.;
- Includes bibliographical references and index."One of Canada's foremost authors and journalists offers a gripping account of the contest between John Diefenbaker and Lester Pearson, two prime ministers who fought each other relentlessly, but who between them created today's Canada. John Diefenbaker has been unfairly treated by history. Although he wrestled with personal demons, his governments launched major reforms in public health care, law reform and immigration. On his watch, First Nations on reserve obtained the right to vote and the federal government began to open up the North. He established Canada as a leader in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, and took the first steps in making Canada a leader in the fight against nuclear proliferation. And Diefenbaker's Bill of Rights laid the groundwork for the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He set in motion many of the achievements credited to his successor, Lester B. Pearson. Pearson, in turn, gave coherence to Diefenbaker's piecemeal reforms. He also pushed Parliament to adopt a new, and now much-loved, Canadian flag against Diefenbaker's fierce opposition. Pearson understood that if Canada were to be taken seriously as a nation, it must develop a stronger sense of self. Pearson was superbly prepared for the role of prime minister: decades of experience at External Affairs, respected by leaders from Washington to Delhi to Beijing, the only Canadian to win the Nobel Prize for Peace. Diefenbaker was the better politician, though. If Pearson walked with ease in the halls of power, Diefenbaker connected with the farmers and small-town merchants and others left outside the inner circles. Diefenbaker was one of the great orators of Canadian political life; Pearson spoke with a slight lisp. Diefenbaker was the first to get his name in the papers, as a crusading attorney: Diefenbaker for the Defence, champion of the little man. But he struggled as a politician, losing five elections before making it into the House of Commons, and becoming as estranged from the party elites as he was from the Liberals, until his ascension to the Progressive Conservative leadership in 1956 through a freakish political accident. As a young university professor, Pearson caught the attention of the powerful men who were shaping Canada's first true department of foreign affairs, rising to prominence as the helpful fixer, the man both sides trusted, the embodiment of a new country that had earned its place through war in the counsels of the great powers: ambassador, undersecretary, minister, peacemaker. Everyone knew he was destined to be prime minister. But in 1957, destiny took a detour. Then they faced each other, Diefenbaker v Pearson, across the House of Commons, leaders of their parties, each determined to wrest and hold power, in a decade-long contest that would shake and shape the country. Here is a tale of two men, children of Victoria, who led Canada into the atomic age: each the product of his past, each more like the other than either would ever admit, fighting each other relentlessly while together forging the Canada we live in today. To understand our times, we must first understand theirs"--
