The boat is manned by the ill-mannered bachelor, Charlie. Together they embark on a long difficult journey, without any comfort. Rose grows determined to assist in the British war effort and presses Charlie until he finally agrees and together they steam up the Ulana encountering an enemy fort, raging rapids, bloodthirsty parasites and endlessly branching steam which always seem to lead them to what appear to be impenetrable swamps. Broadway butterfly : a thriller / by DiVello, Sara,author.;
"Manhattan, 1923. Scandalous flapper Dot King is found dead in her Midtown apartment, a bottle of chloroform beside her and a fortune in jewels missing. Dot's headline-making murder grips the city. It also draws a clutch of lovers, parasites, and justice seekers into one of the city's most mesmerizing mysteries. Among them: Daily News crime reporter Julia Harpman, chasing the story while navigating a male-dominated industry; righteous NYPD detective John D. Coughlin, struggling against city corruption; and Ella Bradford, the victim's Harlem maid, closest confidante, and keeper of secrets. Adding fuel to the already volatile crime: a politically connected Philadelphia socialite, an Atlantic City bootlegger, Dot's dicey gigolo lover, a sultry Broadway dancer, and a cagey sugar daddy guarding secrets of his own. From Broadway's glittering lights to its sordid underbelly to the machinations of the country's most powerful men, Julia embarks on a quest for justice. What she discovers, twist after breathtaking twist, might be even more nefarious than murder"--Publisher marketing.

Great Lakes untamed. [videorecording] / by McIntyre Media,distributor.;
Animals of the Great Lakes cope with the most extreme, unpredictable temperature changes on Earth - from summer highs of 40 degrees to winter lows of minus 40. This transformation creates mysteries and marvels of evolution, life uniquely adapted to change. This land of wonder has weird and unique animal behaviours. The world's largest mass spawning occurs near Lake Michigan. Wolves fish for white suckerfish to feed their pups. Massasauga Rattlesnakes swim between Lake Huron's 30,000 islands to give birth to live young. A mother moose dives to the bottom of the lake to feed her calf. A thirty-year-old female salamander, the world's only 'photosynthetic vertebrate', makes an epic migration across snow near Lake Huron. In Lake Erie, colourful redside dace have evolved to catch insects in the air. Parasitic mussels imitate minnows to lure their prey and biologists use innovative new science to battle invasive sea lamprey. The adaptation of wildlife to successfully live and thrive in the Great Lakes watershed gives us hope about the future of the world's greatest and most important freshwater ecosystem.E.DVD.

Scout's honor / by Anderson, Lily,1988-author.;
Prudence Perry is a third-generation Ladybird Scout who must battle literal (and figurative) monsters and the weight of her legacy in Scout's Honor by Lily Anderson, a YA paranormal perfect for fans of Stranger Things and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Sixteen-year-old Prudence Perry is a legacy Ladybird Scout, born to a family of hunters sworn to protect humans from mulligrubs--interdimensional parasites who feast on human emotions like sadness and anger. Masquerading as a prim and proper ladies' social organization, the Ladybirds brew poisons masked as teas and use knitting needles as daggers, at least until they graduate to axes and swords. Three years ago, Prue's best friend was killed during a hunt, so she kissed the Scouts goodbye, preferring the company of her punkish friends lovingly dubbed the Criminal Element much to her mother and Tia Lo's disappointment. However, unable to move on from her guilt and trauma, Prue devises a risky plan to infiltrate the Ladybirds in order to swipe the Tea of Forgetting, a restricted tincture laced with a powerful amnesia spell. But old monster-slaying habits die hard and Prue finds herself falling back into the fold, growing close with the junior scouts that she trains to fight the creatures she can't face. When her town is hit with a mysterious wave of demons, Prue knows it's time to confront the most powerful monster of all: her past.

Everything I have is yours : a marriage / by Henderson, Eleanor,author.;
"A turbulent romance meets harrowing medical mystery: the true story of the author's twenty-year marriage defined by her husband's chronic illness-and a testament to the endurance of love. Eleanor met Aaron when she was just a teenager and he was working at a local record store-older, cool, experienced, and with an electric personality. Escaping the clichés of fleeting young love, their summer romance bloomed into a relationship that survived college and culminated in a marriage and two children. From the outside looking in, their life had all the trappings of what most would consider a success story. But, as in any marriage, things weren't always as they seemed. On top of the typical stresses of parenting, money, and work, there were Aaron's untended wounds of depression, addiction, and family trauma. Then, when burning lesions appeared on his body overnight, Eleanor was as baffled as his doctors. There seemed to be no obvious diagnosis, let alone a cure. And when the lesions gave way to Aaron's increasingly disturbed concerns about parasites living inside him, the husband she loved began to unravel before her eyes. A new fissure ruptured in their marriage, and new questions piled onto old ones: Where does physical illness end and mental illness begin? Where does one person end and another begin? And how do we exist alongside someone else's suffering? Emotional, propulsive, and at times heartbreaking, Eleanor Henderson's Everything I Have Is Yours tells the story of a marriage tested by powerful forces out of both partners' control. It's not only a memoir of a wife's tireless quest to heal her husband, but one that asks just what it means to accept someone as they are"--

Not on my watch : how a renegade whale biologist took on governments and industry to save wild salmon / by Morton, Alexandra,1957-author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index."Alexandra Morton has been called "the Jane Goodall of Canada." Here is her brilliant account of her thirty-year fight to save British Columbia's wild salmon, inspiring in its own right but also a roadmap of resistance. Alexandra Morton came north from California in the early 1980s, following her first love--the northern resident orca. In remote Echo Bay, in the Broughton Archipelago, she found the perfect place to settle into all she had ever dreamed of: a lifetime of observing and learning what these big-brained mammals are saying to each other. She was also lucky enough to get there just in time to witness a place of true natural abundance, and learned how to thrive in the wilderness as a scientist and a single mother. Then, in 1989, industrial aquaculture moved into the region, chasing the whales away. Her First Nations neighbours, whose people had depended on the bounty of wild salmon for 10,000 years, asked her if she would write letters on their behalf to government protesting the damage the farms were doing to the fisheries, and one thing led to another. Soon Alex had shifted her scientific focus to documenting the infectious diseases and parasites that pour from the ocean pens of Atlantic salmon into the migration routes of wild Pacific salmon, and then to proving their disastrous impact on wild salmon and the entire ecosystem of the coast. Alex stood against the farms, first representing her community, then alone, and at last as part of an uprising that built around her as ancient Indigenous governance resisted a province and a country that wouldn't recognize their own laws. She has used her science, many acts of protest and the legal system in her unrelenting efforts to save wild salmon--a story that reveals her own doggedness and bravery but also shines a bright light on the ways other humans doggedly resist the truth. Here, she brilliantly calls those humans to account: for their sake, as much as ours, they need to listen to the wisdom of the wild salmon and of the people who have lived with them for 10,000 years."--
