- A good war : mobilizing Canada for the climate emergency / by Klein, Seth,1968-author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index."A bold blueprint to retool our economy and transform our politics for a zero-carbon future. The IPCC's 2018 report told us in no uncertain terms that the world has just ten years to at least halve our greenhouse gas emissions if we are to have a hope of holding global warming to a 1.5°C increase. Canada is not on a path to meet its greenhouse gas reduction targets, and radical change to the way we live and work must happen at high speed, but how are we ever to do this? Well, we've actually done it before. During the Second World War, Canadians and their government completely remade the economy -- retooling factories, transforming the workforce, and creating common cause among Canadians for the war effort. In A Good War, author and activist Seth Klein looks at the Second World War strategies and shows how they can be repurposed today for a rapid transition. He demonstrates that this change can create jobs and reduce inequality while tackling our climate obligations. From enlisting broad public support to new economic models, and new job creation to investment in green infrastructure, Klein shows us a bold, practical policy plan for a zero-carbon Canada. In a coincidence almost too uncanny, COVID-19 has brought change upon our world that would have been unthinkable a few months ago, change very like what Klein presciently proposes in these pages. It turns out the world can turn on a dime if necessary. Now is the time to use the billions of dollars governments are spending to support their economies to invest in climate change and social infrastructure for a better future. And the blueprint is in your hands."--

- My fight for Canadian healthcare : a thirty-year battle to put patients first / by Day, Brian,1947-author.;
Includes bibliographical references."On July 15, 2022, the British Columbia Court of Appeal ruled that patients in BC were suffering, and many risked dying, as a result of delayed access to care. The ruling included a conclusion that the delays were caused by planned and deliberate government strategies to limit resources and capacity. Despite that, they upheld laws that cause patients to die. Their rationale was that allowing non-government options, which is something every other country on the planet allows, might negatively impact our existing, grossly underperforming, health system. Canada is currently ranked 10th out of 10 universal health systems in highly developed countries. The Appeal Court made its decision despite an admission that the trial data "represents real people, with real pain, a real setbacks, and real risk of dying prematurely" and that "waiting inherently carries the risk of death." This book traces a personal journey through a Canadian health system that has reached the point of imposing serious harm on patients. Governments have stubbornly adhered to principles developed over 60 years ago. Medicare was supposed to act as a safety net. Instead, it has become a trap in which patients are forced to suffer. Wole Soyinka, the 1986 Nobel Prize winner for literature, once stated: "Books and all forms of writing have always been objects of terror to those who seek to suppress the truth." While this book may not strike terror in those who have opposed me over the years, I hope it will at least promote guilt in the hearts of those who fought us in the courtroom, many of whom have benefitted from their own extensive use of private clinics, including ours"--

- While you were out : an intimate family portrait of mental illness in an era of silence / by Kissinger, Meg,author.;
Includes bibliographical references."From award-winning journalist Meg Kissinger, a searing memoir of a family besieged by mental illness, as well as an incisive exploration of the systems that failed them and a testament to the love that sustained them. Growing up in the 1960s in the suburbs of Chicago, Meg Kissinger's family seemed to live a charmed life. With eight kids and two loving parents, the Kissingers radiated a warm, boisterous energy. Whether they were spending summer days on the shores of Lake Michigan, barreling down the ski slopes, or navigating the trials of their Catholic school, the Kissingers always knew how to live large and play hard. But behind closed doors, a harsher reality was unfolding. A heavily-medicated mother hospitalized for anxiety and depression, a manic father prone to violence, and children in the throes of bipolar disorder and depression, two of whom would take their own lives. Through it all, the Kissingers faced the world with their signature dark humor and the unspoken family rule--never talk about it. While You Were Out begins as the personal story of one family's struggles, then opens outward as Kissinger details how childhood tragedy catalyzed a journalism career focused on exposing our country's flawed mental health care. Combining the intimacy of memoir with the rigor of investigative reporting, the book explores the consequences of shame, the havoc of botched public policy, and the hope offered by new treatment strategies. This is a story of one family's love and devotion in the face of relentless struggle. It is a book for anyone who cares about someone with mental illness. In other words, it is a book for everyone"--

- Punishing Putin : inside the global economic war to bring down Russia / by Baker, Stephanie,1967-author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index."Undeterred by eight years of timid US sanctions, Vladimir Putin ordered his full-scale assault on Ukraine on February 24, 2022. In the hours that followed across the world, Western leaders weaponized economic tools to counter an unprecedented land grab by a nuclear-armed power. What followed was an undeniably world-changing financial experiment that risked throwing the world into a devastating recession. The end goal was simple: to sap the strength of Putin's war machine and damage the Russian economy -- once the eleventh largest on the planet. Here, Russian expert and veteran journalist Stephanie Baker explains in fascinating detail how this furious shadow-war unfolded: its causes, how it is being executed, and its ability to affect Russia and the course of history. From seizing superyachts to manipulating the global price of oil to trying to block the sale of military technology to Russia, we learn how the White House coordinated with top officials in London and Brussels to freeze a staggering $300 billion in foreign currency reserves accumulated in the West by Russia's central bank. Mobilizing an army of white collar-crime investigators and experts on international law, Baker explores how the West has cracked down on illicit Russian money by targeting oligarchs, one superyacht at a time, and their enablers around the world. Filled with propulsive, fly-on-the-wall details, Punishing Putin takes us into the frantic backroom deliberations that led to a whole new era of carefully calculated "economic statecraft" and shows how these new strategies are already radically rearranging global alliances that will influence the world order today, and for generations to come"--
