In the 18th century, European powers combed the South Seas, searching out unexplored lands, treasures, and people. British ships, commanded by celebrated navigators, such as Captain James Cook, led the way. British sea power led to discoveries that would lay the foundations for its empire. Then in the 18th and 19th centuries British plant hunters spread out across the world trading plants, transforming landscapes and building a commercial empire based on products such as tea, cotton and rubber. The Industrial Revolution occurred in Britain first and it then exported products that the world wanted; railways, locomotives, steamships and the telegraph. Britain's empire was also one of conquest and credit; an empire based on money, on violence, and on the ability to employ large numbers of troops to fight. In this episode of Travel Thru History we visit a city in the Southeastern US that you can hear from miles away. It's rightfully called Music City but you know it as Nashville, Tennessee. We dig deep into the city's past and find that there's more than just a vibrant music scene. There's a melody of Civil War history. First, we take in the magnificent Belmont Mansion. This thirty-six room summer home lies on the campus of Belmont University and is now a museum that boasts the incredible art collection of the original owners. Then we head to the home of the hero of the Battle of New Orleans, 7th US President Andrew Jackson's Tennessee mansion, known as The Hermitage. Next, we learn why Nashville is called the "Athens of the South." And every Athens needs its Parthenon, and Nashville doesn't disappoint. They have an exact replica of the Parthenon built in Ancient Greece. Then we're trekking uphill to the ruins of Fort Negley. Nashville was a city divided as we learn how this star-shaped fort was occupied during the Civil War. In the seventh century, a great new religion was born and rose up in the deserts of what is now Saudi Arabia. Within 200 years, the religion had spread throughout the Middle East and North Africa, and then through the Moors into Southern Spain and Portugal. By the 13th century it had spread through the Ottomans into Eastern Europe, and by the 15th, through the Mughal's to India. In this episode of Empire Builders, we explore ten sites that made history as we chart the rise and fall of these great Muslim empires. Using CGI, contributions from experts in their fields and re-enactments, we visit sites such as the Dome of the Rock, in Jerusalem, and the Great Mosque of Damascus, home of the Ummayid dynasty. We also explore the Mezquita Mosque in Cordoba, Spain, arguably the greatest building in Moorish Spain and the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, home of the Ottoman sultans for hundreds of years.
