The Descent : Witnessing Russia's Spiral into Madness Under Putin. by Bennetts, Marc.;
From the wild 1990s in Moscow to narrowly escaping death under fire in Ukraine, 'The Descent' is a personal diary of how Russia spiraled into violent insanity. Marc Bennetts witnessed the often-terrifying events in Russia up close, observing how the Kremlin's ubiquitous propaganda warped minds and fomented hatred of Putin's foes. After leaving Russia, he travelled in war-torn Ukraine, where he came face-to-face with the appalling consequences of this madness.Library Bound Incorporated

The He-Man effect [graphic novel] : how American toymakers sold you your childhood / by Brown, Box,author,illustrator.;
Includes bibliographical references."Powered by the advent of television and supercharged by the deregulation era of the 1980s, media companies and toy manufacturers joined forces to dominate the psyches of American children. But what are the consequences when a developing brain is saturated with the same kind of marketing bombardment found in Red Scare propaganda? Brian "Box" Brown's The He-Man Effect shows how corporate manipulation brought muscular, accessory-stuffed action figures to dizzying heights in the 1980s and beyond. Putting beloved brands like H-Man, Transformers, My Little Pony, and even Mickey Mouse in the spotlight, the graphic history exposes a world with no rules and no concern beyond profit."--Publisher.

Midnight in Chernobyl : the untold story of the world's greatest nuclear disaster / by Higginbotham, Adam,author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Early in the morning of April 26, 1986, Reactor Number Four of the Chernobyl Atomic Energy Station exploded, triggering one of the twentieth century's greatest disasters. In the thirty years since then, Chernobyl has become lodged in the collective nightmares of the world: shorthand for the spectral horrors of radiation poisoning, for a dangerous technology slipping its leash, for ecological fragility, and for what can happen when a dishonest and careless state endangers its citizens and the entire world. But the real story of the accident, clouded from the beginning by secrecy, propaganda, and misinformation, has long remained in dispute. Drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews conducted over the course of more than ten years, as well as letters, unpublished memoirs, and documents from recently-declassified archives, Adam Higginbotham brings the disaster to life through the eyes of the men and women who witnessed it firsthand.

Staying with an eclectic array of hosts, he bumps into gun nuts, Internet conspiracy theorists, faux shamans, and Putin fans; learns to drive in death-defying Russian style; and discovers how to cure hangovers by sniffing rye bread. But he also sees a darker side of the country, witnessing firsthand the effects of Putin's influence in the run-up to the 2016 American election and the power of propaganda in this "post-fact" era."--Provided by publisher.

Stalingrad / by Grossman, Vasiliĭ,author.; Chandler, Robert,1953-editor,translator.; Bit-Yunan, Yury,editor.; Chandler, Elizabeth,1947-translator.; translation of:Grossman, Vasiliĭ.Za pravoe delo.English.; Grossman, Vasiliĭ.For a just cause.;
Inclbies bibliographical references."Vassily Grossman (1905-1964) has become well-known in the last twenty years -- above all for his novel Life and fate. This has often been described as a Soviet (or anti-Soviet) War and peace. Most readers, however, do not realize that it is only the second half of a dilogy. The first half, originally titled Stalingrad but published in 1952 under the title For a just cause, has received surprisingly little attention. Scholars and critics seem to have assumed that, since it was first published in Stalin's lifetime, it can only be considered empty propaganda. In reality, there is little difference between the two novels. The chapters in the earlier novel about the Shaposhnikov family are as tender, and sometimes humorous, as in the later novel. The chapters devoted to the long retreats of 1941 and the first half of 1942 are perhaps still more vivid than the battle scenes in the later novel"--
