- Bitch : on the female of the species / by Cooke, Lucy,1970-author.;
- Includes bibliographical references and index."It's a tale as old as time: the philandering man wants to chase sex with whomever, wherever, and at all costs-and to avoid supporting his offspring at all costs, too-while leaving a long-suffering wife to clean up his mess. You can find the idea in comedians' routines, inane self-help books, and any number of movies, novels, and television shows. It almost all comes from evolutionary biology and psychology, and the tale boils down to this: Females are naturally submissive, passive, and maternal, while males are necessarily dominant, competitive, and promiscuous. And as Lucy Cooke shows in Bitch, it's almost completely wrong. In its place, Cooke offers a new vision of the female sex: depending on which one you choose, you can find females that are inherently as promiscuous, competitive, strategically cooperative, ardent, aggressive, dominant, dynamic, complex and variable as evolutionary psychology's stereotypical male. So how did the idea of the passive female get so entrenched? Tracing biology from Darwin to today, Cooke shows how the men behind breakthrough theories in evolution have infused their ideas with a massive dose of societal sexism. Cooke surfs the work of two generations of feminist evolutionary biologists, showing how they've pushed back against the blinkered views of evolution's founding fathers to reveal the true diversity of nature. She meets with pioneering scientists--Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, Jeanne Altmann, Mary-Jane West-Eberhard, Patricia Gowaty and more--following their work around the globe. From the dominant female lemurs of Madagascar to same-sex female albatross couples in Hawaii to female killer whale elders in the Salish sea, Cooke takes us on a journey through a side of nature that's much less binary, less heterosexual, and less sexist than we have been led to expect. Fierce, funny, and revolutionary, Bitch is a scientific manifesto that shows us an entirely new perspective on what it means to be a female animal, with serious implications for all of us today"--

- A quiet life : a novel / by Joella, Ethan,author.;
- Set in a close-knit Pennsylvania suburb in the grip of winter, A Quiet Life follows three people grappling with loss and finding a tender wisdom in their grief. Chuck Ayers used to look forward to nothing so much as his annual trip to Hilton Head with his wife, Cat--that yearly taste of relaxation they'd become accustomed to in retirement, after a lifetime of working and raising two children. Now, just months after Cat's death, Chuck finds that he can't let go of her things--her favorite towel, the sketchbooks in her desk drawer--as he struggles to pack for a trip he can't imagine taking without her. Ella Burke delivers morning newspapers and works at a bridal shop to fill her days while she anxiously awaits news--any piece of information--about her missing daughter. Ella adjusts to life in a new apartment and answers every call on her phone, hoping her daughter will reach out one day. After the sudden death of her father, Kirsten Bonato set aside her veterinary school aspirations, finding comfort in the steady routine of working at an animal shelter. But as time passes, old dreams and new romantic interests begin to surface--and Kirsten finds herself at another crossroads. In this beautifully crafted and profoundly moving novel, three parallel narratives converge in poignant and unexpected ways, as each character bravely presses onward, trying to recover something they have lost. Emotionally riveting and infused with hope, A Quiet Life celebrates humanity in the midst of uncertainty.

- Chilean Films in Exile - Shorts by Juan Forch. by Forch, Juan,film director.; Herrmann, Jörg,film director.; Barke, Lothar,film director.; Börner, Michael,film director.; Hofmann, Rolf,film director.; DEFA Film Library (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
- Originally produced by DEFA Film Library in 1975.The Chilean director and poet Juan Forch (1948-) immigrated via Mexico to East Germany after the military coup in 1973. He joined the DEFA Studio for Animation Films in Dresden and learned the craft of animation. Between 1975 and 1978, he made several animation and documentary films drawing on his Chilean background and his political experiences in exile. The photo collages Chile Lives (1976) and Nobody Can Stop the Revolution (1976), the latter in collaboration with media artist Lutz Dammbeck, proclaim the hope of a victory of the progressive forces over the Pinochet dictatorship. The collage Chile (1975) by Forch and Jörg Herrmann reveals the USA as the backer of the military coup on September 11, 1973. The trick collage Hitlerpinochet (1975) by Forch and Jörg Herrmann draws similarities between the political slogans of Adolf Hitler and Augusto Pinochet. In 1976, Forch filmed Chilean students in Dresden drawing a mural in honor of former President Salvador Allende. The cut-out animation film Neutron Peace? (1977) offers a warning against a nuclear war emanating from the USA. Forch creates a visually and colorfully powerful epic about the life of the indigenous Mapuche in the cut-out film Lautaro (1977), his most comprehensive work at the Dresden studio. Finally, the animation film Rosaura (1978) by Lothar Barke atmospherically translates a poem by Juan Forch into images.Mode of access: World Wide Web.
