20,000 Species of Bees. by Urresola Solaguren, Estibaliz,film director.; Gabarain, Ane,actor.; Lazkano, Itziar,actor.; López Arnaiz, Patricia,actor.; Otero, Sofía,actor.; Film Movement (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Ane Gabarain, Itziar Lazkano, Patricia López Arnaiz, Sofía OteroOriginally produced by Film Movement in 2023.In a small, sleepy village in the Basque Country, a sculptor named Ane and her three children arrive at her mother Lita's home for summer vacation where they are surrounded by extended family and nosy neighbors. Ane and her mother's relationship is strained — Lita disapproves of her daughter's frayed marriage, career as an artist, and the way she parents her obstinate and mischievous children. Chief among them is eight-year-old Aitor, nicknamed Coco after it becomes clear that being referred to by the name Aitor elicits feelings of distress in the child. Born biologically male, neither birth name nor the genderless nickname feel quite right, and Ane’s concern for her child grows as Coco becomes more withdrawn. The child’s only respite lies in the Basque hills, where Ane's aunt Lourdes tends to the family's beekeeping farm. Among the peaceful humming of bees and Lourdes' open-minded guardianship, Coco slowly begins to confide in family and friends her discomfort in her body, eventually voicing a desire to be treated as a girl. As Coco explores her own developing identity over the summer, Ane and the rest of her family in turn must learn to accept the child as she is.Basque director Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren’s assured debut feature is a wonderfully sensitive work carried by the Berlinale Silver Bear winning lead performance of newcomer Sofía Otero. An authentic and heart-wrenching story of transition, 20,000 SPECIES OF BEES is "a landmark in the filmic discussion of gender, sexuality and identity," (The Film Verdict).Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Namibia - Return to a New Country. by Schuch, Christoph,film director.; DEFA Film Library (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by DEFA Film Library in 1997.Starting in 1979, nearly 2,000 children were evacuated from Namibia (and refugee camps in neighboring Angola and Zambia) to protect them from the violence of the civil war between South Africa and the socialist liberation movement, SWAPO. In a gesture of solidarity with SWAPO, the GDR accepted almost 500 children for their “protection, education, and socialist training.” After unification in 1990, they were suddenly returned—after Namibia's independence and first all-race free elections, which took place the same week as the Berlin Wall opened.The young people interviewed in this film reflect on the experiences of their childhoods in East Germany, focusing especially on their sense of identity and the difficulties they faced fitting into both European and Namibian societies.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

My Imaginary Country. by Guzmán, Patricio,film director.; Icarus Films (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by Icarus Films in 2022.One day, without warning, a revolution exploded. It was the event that master documentarian Patricio Guzmán had been waiting for all his life: a million and a half people in the streets of Santiago, Chile, demanding justice, education, health care, and a new constitution to replace the strident rules imposed on the country during the Pinochet military dictatorship. Urgent and inspired, MY IMAGINARY COUNTRY features harrowing front-line protest footage and interviews with dynamic activist leaders and powerfully connects Chile's complex, bloody history to contemporary revolutionary social movements and the election of a new president.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Death in the City. by Ghosh, Balaka,film director.; Ronin Films (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by Ronin Films in 2022.The sacred city of Varanasi, situated on the holy Ganges, ‘the river of life’, is the revered destination for death for Hindus since time immemorial. With legendary funeral pyres burning non-stop for over three millennia on the river bank, the city’s status is founded on the belief that dying in Varanasi breaks the repeated cycle of rebirth. Filmed across four years, 2018 - 2021, DEATH IN THE CITY is an intimate portrayal of ‘The City of Life and Death’, the myriad communities who live and work in its ancient streets; including those waiting to die or those working with the dead, along with rare access to the death-worshipping Aghori Saints. This is a film in three movements: the spiritual, the metaphysical and the experiential. The most pressured crematorium in the world, Varanasi’s relationship with death is at the same time auspicious, spiritual, and industrial.Mode of access: World Wide Web.
