Handmade. by Catlow, Nikalas,film director.; Java Films (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by Java Films in 2023.HANDMADE tells the inspiring story of Nukufilm, the oldest surviving stop-motion animation studio in the world, founded in 1957. During the Soviet era, Nukufilm was both financed and censored by the USSR government. In the 1980s, a new generation of animators took over. They had a more adventurous approach to stop-motion animation and were given the freedom to experiment with any style they wanted. Despite strict censorship regulations, they were able to conceal messages and layers in their animations without being detected. When Estonia regained independence in 1991, Nukufilm lost its distribution through Moscow, and the studio struggled to survive in a global market. However, they managed to learn the new market and become businessmen, surviving in the new free market economy. This debut film offers a glimpse into stop-motion animation production today, as well as rare archive material from stop-motion animation history, and is an ode to the perseverance and creativity of the Nukufilm studio.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

David Bowie. [videorecording] : from Konrad to Starman 1962-1972 / by Bowie, David.; Smokin',publisher.;
David Bowie.Best known of course for his startling imagery and multiple characters, David Bowie had, for the best part of a decade prior to getting his first big break, been sitting on the margins of the music industry trying everything he could come up with in an attempt to get noticed. This film investigates what happened between the birth of one David Jones in Brixton, London in 1947 and the dawn of his career in music - which began when, at the age of 16, he formed local group The Konrads as saxophonist - and the day when the same young man, by now re-christened David Bowie, first came to the attention of the world at large under his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust in 1972. Featuring rare and exclusive interviews, contributions from those who worked with David during this time, rare film footage, archive material plus news reports, location shoots, rare photographs and much more besides, this intriguing documentary is the finest film yet to emerge on this often forgotten period of Bowie's incredible career.E.DVD ; full screen presentation.

Hell's half-acre : the untold story of the Benders, a serial killer family on the American frontier / by Jonusas, Susan,author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index."In 1873 the people of Labette County in Kansas made a grisly discovery. Buried on a homestead seven miles south of the town of Cherryvale, in a bloodied cellar and under frost-covered soil, were countless bodies in varying states of decay. The discovery sent the local community and national newspapers into a frenzy that continued for over two decades, and the land on which the crimes took place became known as 'Hells Half-Acre.' When it emerged that a family of four known as the Benders had been accused of the slayings, the case was catapulted to infamy. The idea that a family of seemingly respectable homesteaders--one among thousands who were relocating further west looking for land and opportunity after the Civil War--were capable of operating 'a human slaughter pen' appalled and fascinated the nation. But who the Benders really were, why they committed such a vicious killing spree, and what became of them when they fled from the law is a mystery that has remains unsolved to this day--not that there aren't some convincing theories. Part gothic western, part literary whodunnit, and part immersive study of postbellum America, Hell's Half-Acre sheds new light on one of the most notorious cases in our nation's history while holding a torch to a society under the strain of rapid change and moral disarray. Susan Jonasus draws on extensive original archival material, and introduces us to a fascinating cast of characters, including the despairing families of the victims as well as the fugitives that helped the murderers escape. Hell's Half-Acre is not simply a book about a mass murder. It is a journey into the turbulent heart of nineteenth century America, a place where modernity stalks across the landscape, violently displacing existing populations and wearily building new ones. It is a world where folklore can quickly become fact, and an entire family of criminals can slip right through a community's fingers, only to reappear at the most unexpected of times"--

Vimy : the battle and the legend / by Cook, Tim,1971-author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index."Why does Vimy matter? Tim Cook, Canada's foremost military historian and a Charles Taylor Prize winner, examines the battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917 and the way the memory of it has evolved over 100 years. Vimy is unlike any other battle in Canadian history: it has been described as the "birth of the nation." But the meaning of that phrase has never been explored, nor has any writer explained why the battle continues to resonate with Canadians. The Vimy battle that began April 9, 1917, was the first time the four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force fought together. 10,600 men were killed or injured over four days--twice the casualty rate of the Dieppe Raid in August 1942. Cook has uncovered new material and photographs from official archives and private collections across Canada and from around the world. Many of these resources have never been used before by other historians, writers, or film-makers. On the 100th anniversary of Vimy, and as Canada celebrates 150 years as a country, this new book is about more than a defining battle: it is a story of Canadian identity and memory, by a writer who brings history alive."--

Includes bibliographical references."The "Micmac Indian Craftsmen" of Elsipogtog (then known as Big Cove) rose to national prominence in the early 1960s. At their peak, they were featured in print media from coast to coast, their work was included in books and exhibitions--including at Expo 67--and their designs were featured on prints, silkscreened notecards, jewelry, tapestries, and even English porcelain. Primarily self-taught, deeply rooted in their community, and fluent Mi'kmaw speakers, they were among the first modern Indigenous artists in Atlantic Canada. Inspired by traditional Wabanaki stories, they produced an eclectic range of handmade objects that were sophisticated, profound, and eloquent. By 1966, the withdrawal of government support compromised the Craftsmen's resources, production soon ceased, and their work faded from memory. Now, for the first time, the story of this ground-breaking co-operative and their art is told in full. Accompanying a major exhibition at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery opening in 2022, Wabanaki Modern features essays on the history of this vibrant art workshop, archival photographs of the artisans, and stunning full-colour images of their art."--
