Say Anarcha : a young woman, a devious surgeon, and the harrowing birth of modern women's health / by Hallman, J. C.,author.;
Includes bibliographic key to online citations and index."In 1846, a young surgeon, J. Marion Sims ("The Father of Gynecology"), began several years of experimental surgeries on a young enslaved woman known as Anarcha ("The Mother of Gynecology"). This series of procedures--performed without anesthesia and resulting in Anarcha's so-called "cure"--forever altered the path of women's health. Despite brutal practices and failed techniques, Sims proclaimed himself the curer of obstetric fistula, a horrific condition that had stymied the medical world for centuries. Parlaying supposed success to the founding of a new hospital in New York City--where he conducted additional dangerous experiments on Irish women--Sims went on to a profitable career treating gentry and royalty in Europe, becoming one of the world's first celebrity surgeons. Medical text after medical text hailed Anarcha as a pivotal figure in the history of medicine, but little was recorded about the woman herself. Through extensive research, author J. C. Hallman has unearthed the first evidence ever found of Anarcha's life that did not come from Sims's suspect reports. With incredible tenacity, Hallman traced Anarcha's path from her beginnings on a Southern plantation to the backyard clinic where she was subjected to scores of painful surgical experiments, to her years after in Richmond and New York City, and to her final resting place in a lonely Virginia forest. When Hallman first set out to find Anarcha, the world was just beginning to grapple with the history of white supremacy and its connection to racial health disparities exposed by COVID-19 and the disproportionate number of Black women who die while giving birth. In telling the stories of the "Mother" and "Father" of gynecology, Say Anarcha excavates the history of a heroic enslaved woman and deconstructs the biographical smokescreen of a surgeon whom history has falsely enshrined as a heroic pioneer. Kin in spirit to The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Hallman's dual biographical narratives tell a single story that corrects errors calcified in history and illuminates the sacrifice of a young woman who changed the world only to be forgotten by it-until now"--

Rachel Bloom, Donna Lynne Champlin, Vincent Rodriguez Iii, Pete Gardner, Vella Lovell, Gabrielle Ruiz.When last we left our intrepid and at least slightly nutty heroine, Rebecca Bunch (Rachel Bloom), she was at her wedding, abandoned at the altar by her obsession, Josh Chan (Vincent Rodriguez III). In that moment, Rebecca found herself in a cliffhanger. Literally, because she, like, almost flung herself off a cliff. Instead, she found an unexpected well of strength inside herself and finally stood up to the father who abandoned her, flanked by her fierce girl squad. Phew. It was quite the wedding. So what's a girl to do now? Why, get revenge, of course. Because Josh Chan, love of her life? He's crossed over to the dark side - ergo, he must pay, unless, of course, he sees the error of his ways and realizes he and Rebecca are meant to be. But will he? It might be a bit tough to figure out, since he ran off the day of the wedding to be a priest. (Did we mention it was quite the wedding?) There's also the matter of Rebecca's friends and how far they will follow her attraction now that it's turned possibly just a touch fatal. Paula (Donna Lynne Champlin), now in training to be a legal eagle, has to decide how far to walk the gangplank for her cookie, Rebecca. Meanwhile, Valencia (Gabrielle Ruiz) and Heather (Vella Lovell) will be facing giant obstacles and challenges in their personal lives. Hey, it's not like anyone in West Covina ever just gets to be happy. In season three, we will also spend more time with a new man in Rebecca's orbit, mega-WASP Nathaniel Plimpton III (Scott Michael Foster), who will collide with her like a very handsome meteor. He may seem all alpha on the outside, but he has his own daddy issues to work out. See above - no one in the Cov just gets to be happy right away. In other WeCo news, supercouple White Josh (David Hull) and Darryl (Pete Gardner) will be challenged by Darryl's baby fever. Will Darryl give up his yen for a baby Darryl or Darrylette? And how will Rebecca be entangled in their plans? And what about Rebecca's mental health? Will she finally turn her attention to what's fueling her romantic fire? This and more, accompanied by a bajillion songs and dances, coming up next on season three of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.14A.DVD ; widescreen presentation ; Dolby Digital 5.1.

Hello! I want to die, please fix me : depression in the first person / by Paperny, Anna Mehler,author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index."Frank, eye-opening, heartbreaking and disarmingly funny, Anna Mehler Paperny is a fabulous, vibrant new voice. In her galvanizing memoir-meets-exposé, writing with riveting vitality and intelligence about surviving suicide and the ways we try to talk about and treat depression, she has discovered what eludes many: a way to reach out to us to talk about one of the increasingly concerning medical issues today. An energetic tour-de-force of empathy and desire for understanding, Hello! I Want to Die, Please Fix Me is compelling reading, as well as essential for anyone curious to understand how it feels to be depressed, or whose life, family or friends has been touched by depression. Anna Mehler Paperny is a young journalist from Toronto--a smart, passionate reporter who has contributed to the Toronto Star, Global News, The Globe and Mail, The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, and just about every major news outlet you can think of. In her early-twenties, while thriving in her dream job, enjoying warm familial support and a strong social network of friends and colleagues, Anna found herself trapped by feelings of failure and despair. In September 2011, she made her first attempt to kill herself by ingesting a deadly mix of sleeping pills and antifreeze, landing her in the ICU followed by weeks of enforced detention in two different big-city psych wards. This was Anna's entry point into the labyrinthine psychiatric care system--one that is nominally responsible for providing the best reasonable care to millions of Canadians suffering from severe, life-threatening mental illness. Her first stay in the psych ward--at times horrifying, other times boring, hilarious and absurd--was just the beginning of a long recovery and a journey towards understanding, first-hand, the myriad ways our systems and medical practitioners treat--and fail to treat--a disease that afflicts a full fifth of the population. While trying to be a good patient, Anna cannot help but turn her intrepid journalist's eye on the world around her--in the psych ward, as an outpatient, as a survivor enduring the gruelling ordeal of facing concerned family, friends and co-workers; of finding the right meds, the right therapist; of staying insured and employed. Anna's personal account of life in the shadow of self-obliteration explores in searing detail her individual experience of depression, close encounters with fatal self-harm, and the trials and errors of treatment. It is at the same time an illuminating, profound, and utterly original analysis of how we approach mental illness in North America; the novel hypotheses specialists are putting forward to tackle it; and the truth about how primitive our methods of healing sick brains still are."--

About Thirty. by Shanly, Martín,film director.; Dougall, Camila,actor.; Ezcurra, Julia,actor.; Shanly, Martín,actor.; Merlo, Pedro,actor.; Pragda (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Camila Dougall, Julia Ezcurra, Martín Shanly, Pedro MerloOriginally produced by Pragda in 2023.Buenos Aires in March 2020, just days before the outbreak of the pandemic. A wedding is being celebrated; a car overturns. The guests share joints, kisses, sex, and the memory of a loss. At the center of this comedy of errors is Arturo, who is every bit as drawn to misfortune as he is directionless – qualities he shares with the film's full cast of characters. His faux pas and blunders stand in inverse relation to the finesse with which the film elegantly glides back in time from the wedding day to the 2010s. As episodes from Arturo’s life come to the fore – a bus trip to Patagonia with his trans housemate, a painfully awkward dress rehearsal for a play – narrative time is compressed and extended again, while a voiceover provides a steady counterweight to the tumult. As the hit song "Azúcar amargo” (Bitter Sugar) comes on and the dance floor fills, the bittersweet nature of the film becomes apparent with the same clarity as the coughing that proceeds it.Mode of access: World Wide Web.
