Originally produced by DEFA Film Library in 1974.In the 1970s, the East German DEFA Studios responded to the military coup in Chile in 1973. They produced films about Chile and Chilean exiles that were not simply reactions to the political upheavals or demonstrations of solidarity with the Chilean people. In many cases, Chilean artists were directly involved in the creation of these films or were central to the film’s story. This program of six short documentaries features Chilean music (Aparcoa, 1977) and tells daily stories of Chilean exiles in their new East German homeland (A Chilean Wedding, 1977; Copihuito, 1977). The three films by the legendary H&S Studio, a private East German film group, are part of their 10-film Chilean Cycle (1974-1985). They use rare footage to picture the situation at the presidential palace La Moneda on September 11, 1973, the day of the military coup (Fellow Citizens, 1974), and investigate dictator Pinochet’s politics (Psalm 18, 1974) and underground resistance (Money Troubles, 1975).Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Originally produced by DEFA Film Library in 1997.Starting in 1979, nearly 2,000 children were evacuated from Namibia (and refugee camps in neighboring Angola and Zambia) to protect them from the violence of the civil war between South Africa and the socialist liberation movement, SWAPO. In a gesture of solidarity with SWAPO, the GDR accepted almost 500 children for their “protection, education, and socialist training.” After unification in 1990, they were suddenly returned—after Namibia's independence and first all-race free elections, which took place the same week as the Berlin Wall opened.The young people interviewed in this film reflect on the experiences of their childhoods in East Germany, focusing especially on their sense of identity and the difficulties they faced fitting into both European and Namibian societies.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Through ROLLOUT, we seek to show a vivid picture of the powerful and complex narratives and lived experiences driving the “shadow pandemic of vaccine hesitancy" which delayed vaccine uptake across communities worldwide, and ultimately stymied humanity’s chance to achieve global herd immunity. As the rollout efforts expand countywide, Laureen and her fellow healthcare workers visit with vibrant community members - from a church pastor to a radio DJ - who share their perspectives on the vaccination efforts. Through their stories, we feel their visceral mistrust, seemingly sparked by the government’s deeply unpopular and aggressive early pandemic response, and further fueled by a relentless flood of misinformation and conspiracy theories. We explore the deeper historical context that further exacerbates this mistrust, namely the fraught relationship between community members and global health actors, and a global vaccination agenda designed by global elites that disregard the needs of Kibera's residents.Mode of access: World Wide Web.
