- Paul Robeson: "I'm a Negro. I'm an American.". by Tetzlaff, Kurt,film director.; DEFA Film Library (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by DEFA Film Library in 1989.A cinematic homage to the African American singer, actor, civil rights activist Paul Robeson (1898–1976). At the peak of his singing career in the late 1940s, Robeson began to work primarily as a political activist and subsequently had to endure years of discrimination and isolation in his own country during the hysteria of 1950s McCarthyism. The documentary tells Robeson’s story in non-chronological order, using a compilation of materials: rarely shown historical footage, including from the 1949 Peekskill riots; photographs of the U.S. civil rights movement; speeches; performances and visits to East Germany and the Soviet Union. Interviews with Paul Robeson Jr., Earl Robinson, Pete Seeger and Harry Belafonte give insight into the courageous life of a Renaissance man. Commonly referred as the “voice of the other America,” East German officials used Robeson’s image to bolster GDR solidarity with the U.S. civil rights movement.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

- El Golpe Blanco - The White Coup. by Scheumann, Gerhard,film director.; Heynowski, Walter,film director.; Pinochet, Augusto,actor.; Allende, Salvador,actor.; DEFA Film Library (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Augusto Pinochet, Salvador AllendeOriginally produced by DEFA Film Library in 1975.Parliamentary Elections in Chile on March 4, 1973: Reactionary forces, financially backed by the American CIA and international cooperation, attempt to gain a two-thirds majority in the National Congress, which would allow them to impeach President Salvador Allende, who was democratically elected for a six-year term in 1970. These efforts by the right-wing forces and nationalists, a so-called White Coup, seemed to be the last legal way for them to gain governmental power. When this coup fails, the Chilean reactionaries resort to an armed coup, and on September 11, 1973 they successfully launch a military-fascist government.The documentary uncovers the tactics nationalists and their allies used to change Chilean politics during the Allende government. Original footage, photos and audio are interwoven with quotes about the CIA’s role in Chile from major British newspapers, including the International Herald Tribune, Time and The Guardian.This release is the newly digitized original English version of the documentary that was distributed world-wide after the film came out in 1975. The English script was written and spoken by John Peet, a British journalist who defected to East Germany in 1950.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

- Hemlock [electronic resource] : by Albert, Susan Wittig.aut; cloudLibrary;
From Susan Wittig Albert, the New York Times bestselling author of A Plain Vanilla Murder, comes a tightly crafted novel that juxtaposes the disappearance of a rare, remarkably illustrated 18th-century herbal with the true and all-too-human story of its gifted creator, Elizabeth Blackwell. Herbalist China Bayles’ latest adventure takes her to the mountains of North Carolina, where her friend Dorothea Harper serves as the director and curator of the Hemlock House Library, a priceless collection of rare gardening books housed in a haunted mountainside mansion that once belonged to Sunny Carswell, a reclusive heiress. But the most valuable book—A Curious Herbal, created by Elizabeth Blackwell in the 1730s—is  missing and Dorothea is under suspicion. China’s search for the thief takes on a new urgency when she discovers Miss Carswell’s bookseller, the victim of an attempted murder. Is his shooting connected with the theft? And there are other urgent questions: What is the Hemlock Guild? Who owns Socrates.com? Did Sunny Carswell really kill herself, or does her ghost have a different story to tell? And what is the real truth behind the many tantalizing mysteries of A Curious Herbal? Hemlock is a compelling mix of mystery and herb lore, past secrets and present sins, and characters who are as real as your friends and neighbors—in an absorbing novel that only Susan Wittig Albert could create.
