- Colonialism and capitalism : Canada's origins 1500-1890 : a new history for the twenty-first century. by Palmer, Bryan D.,author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index.In the past decade Canadian history has become a hotly contested subject. Iconic figures, notably Sir John A Macdonald, are no longer unquestioned nation-builders. The narrative of two founding peoples has been set aside in favour of recognition of Indigenous nations whose lands were taken up by the incoming settlers. An authoritative and widely-respected Truth and Reconciliation Commission, together with an honoured Chief Justice of the Supreme Court have both described long-standing government policies and practices as "cultural genocide." Historians have researched and published a wide range of new research documenting the many complex threads comprising the Canadian experience. As a leading historian of labour and social movements, Bryan Palmer has been a major contributor to this literature. In this first volume of a major new survey history of Canada, he offers a narrative which is based on the recent and often specialized research and writing of his historian colleagues. One major theme in this book is the colonial practices of the authorities as they pushed aside the original peoples of this country. While the methods varied, the result was opening up Canada's rich resources for exploitation by the incoming European settlers. The second major theme is the role of capitalism in determining how those resources were exploited, and who would reap the enormous power and wealth that accrued. The first volume of this challenging and illuminating new survey history covers the period that concludes in the 1890s after the creation out of Britain's northern colonies of the semi-autonomous federal Canadian state.

- Degrees of separation [graphic novel] : a decade north of 60 / by McCreesh, Alison,author,illustrator.;
At age 21, Alison hitchhiked to the Yukon and spent the summer living in a tent. 10 years later, in the deep of winter and seven months pregnant, she returns. Degrees of Separation is about what happened in between. Over the course of a decade, artist Alison McCreesh lived, worked, and travelled north of the 60th parallel. Through a combination of autobiographical stories, drawings and sketches, Degrees of Separation offers an intimate and understated glimpse of the North as Alison experienced it. From frigid days spent killing time while stranded in the High Arctic, to the challenges of raising a baby in a small shack with no running water, it is one young woman's personal experience of both passing through and of setting down roots. Tinged with McCreesh's characteristic blend of humour and humanity, Degrees of Separation is about the north and its vastness and its diversity. While the backdrop may seem foreign to many, this collection is also a universal exploration of those transformative years from young-adulthood to motherhood. It's a graphic novel navigating themes of connection and disconnect, between the north and the south, but also between different norths and between our different selves.

- Care of : letters, connections, and cures / by Coyote, Ivan,1969-author.;
"In the early days of the coronavirus lockdown, like every artist and creator, writer and storyteller Ivan Coyote was faced with a calendar full of cancelled shows and a heart full of questions that all rhymed with what now? To keep busy while figuring out what to write about next, Ivan began to answer the backlog of mail and correspondences that had come in while they were on the pre-pandemic road: emails, letters, direct messages on social media, soggy handwritten notes found tucked under the windshield wiper of their car after a gig, all of it. In Care Of, Coyote combines the most moving and powerful of these letters with the responses they've sent in the months since the lockdown. Taken together, they become an affirming and joyous reflection on many of the themes and ideas central to Coyote's beloved work as an author and storyteller--a giant love letter to the idea of human connection and the power of truly listening to each other"--

Will Kemi be forced to stay, chipping away at her hard-earned career, if she wants to keep him? As things begin to sour and Kemi faces challenges in her relationship with Tobias, someone else moves back into the picture. Can having it all be a gilded cage? Looking into divorce in Sweden isn't what former model-turned-flight-attendant Brittany-Rae von Lundin anticipated. Only jointly owned assets are split evenly between couples. Brittany gave up her career and went with nothing into Jonny's kingdom. Having had a child with him, Brittany fears their daughter, Maya, will be cut off from the resources she's become accustomed to. Trying to get away from a man obsessed with a ghost isn't going to be easy. And the deeper she digs into his past, the darker the secrets she unravels. Can you run from your past to have it all? After fleeing her home with the help of a client to seek a new life in Sweden, Yasmiin carves out her own small corner of the world, finding love in the arms of Yagiz Çelik. But when someone from her past forces Yasmiin to become a caretaker before she's ready, she now must confront and move beyond her teenage history, all while pursuing her dreams of becoming a makeup artist. Follow the loosely intertwined and messy lives of Kemi, Brittany, and Yasmiin as they interrogate themes of place, prejudice, and patriarchy in Europe. Lọlá Ákínmádé Åkerström proves, yet again, that she is the next great voice of nuanced contemporary women's fiction."--Jacket flap.

- The Passion of Remembrance. by Julien, Isaac,film director.; Blackwood, Maureen,film director.; Women Make Movies (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by Women Make Movies in 1986.THE PASSION OF REMEMBRANCE, the Sankofa collective's greatly influential first film and a landmark work in British avant-garde film and video, ambitiously explores themes of racism, homophobia, sexism, and generational tensions as embodied in the reality known by a Black British family over the years. The film interweaves two narrative threads—one in which a man and a woman discourse on their own experiences living in the UK, another in which events from three decades in the lives of the Baptiste family are staged—Maureen Blackwood and Isaac Julien tease the accumulated fragments into a spellbinding, heterogeneous mosaic that powerfully evokes the multiplicity of Black experience and identity and critiques the British state’s treatment of its marginalized residents.Mode of access: World Wide Web.
