- The hour of the fox / by Palka, Kurt,1941-author.;
"From the bestselling author of The piano maker comes a stunning, profoundly moving story about motherhood, grief, marriage, and friendship. For fans of M. L. Stedman's The light between two oceans. Margaret Bradley is the most senior associate at her prestigious law firm, and on track to make partner. It's the late 1970s, and since her days at law school she has been fighting to prove herself in a male-dominated field. Though her climb up the professional ladder hasn't been an easy one, she feels passion and purpose in her job. That is, until her entire world is shattered by one event: the sudden death of her son Andrew, a military pilot. Now, Margaret lives with a heavy, all-encompassing sense of loss and regret, and it is pushing her further and further away from her husband, Jack, a successful geologist and a loving and loyal partner. Margaret is drawn back to Sweetbarry, a small town on the coast of the North Atlantic, where she spent much of her childhood and inherited her beloved grandmother's house. Her life-long best friend, Aileen, is close by. Theirs is a friendship that has endured happiness and tragedy over the years, so when Aileen's adult son, Danny, is questioned by local police in connection with a violent crime against two children, Margaret rushes to Sweetbarry to offer legal advice. At the same time, she is consumed by memories of her son and the crushing loss of his death. Just when she feels there is no comfort for her in her work or her faltering marriage, she reaches out with an incredible act that has profound reverberations for the family of the two children, a family that, like hers, has been touched by violence and grief. Emotionally resonant, atmospheric, and utterly unforgettable in its depiction of motherhood and loss, The Hour of the Fox shows us how grief can imprint itself on a woman, and on a marriage, and shows us that redemption and healing can be found in unexpected places"--

Originally produced by Perinspire Productions in 2023.In this contemplation on the meanings of movement in the experience of migration, the grace and skill of a Filipina domestic worker are juxtaposed with devotional dances to the Santo Niño statue that Magellan brought to the islands in 1521. - Higher Power. by Ortiz, Dewey,film director.; Aliya, Rafi,film director.; New Day Films (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by New Day Films in 2023.Part advocacy doc, part travelogue and celebration of Black Washingtonian culture, HIGHER POWER highlights local residents looking to create prosperity and nab a piece of the American Dream while trapped in a political system that denies its citizens the fundamental right to self-rule. Viewed through the personal stories of advocates, lawmakers, and aspiring entrepreneurs, HIGHER POWER details the impact of D.C.’s derailed cannabis legalization on Black communities it was enacted to revitalize. More than 70% of D.C. voters approved cannabis legalization. Still, Congress overturned the law, creating a gray market that continues to criminalize Black residents and deny them access to the economic opportunity of legal cannabis. This film documents, in real-time, the fight to end prohibition and the disenfranchisement of 700,000 U.S. citizens. HIGHER POWER makes clear that the solution for both is D.C. statehood.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

- The Psychedelic Revolution. by Curiosity Stream (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by Curiosity Stream in 2022.For Americans who came of age in the 1960s, hallucinogenic drugs like LSD and mescaline are inextricably linked to that decade’s counterculture and guru Timothy Leary’s call to “Turn on, tune in, drop out.” More recently, studies have shown significant efficacy for hallucinogens in treating a range of psychiatric illnesses, including depression, anxiety, and—ironically—substance use disorders. Beyond recreational micro-dosing and Michael Pollan’s “ego dissolution,” psilocybin may prove the source of a revolution in mental health. This lecture explores the history of these mind-altering substances, the evidence for their therapeutic value, and the complex ethical and legal issues that keep them out of reach of most Americans. This talk is given by Jacob Appel of Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

- Crooks : a novel about crime and family / by Berney, Lou,author.;
"From award-winning author Lou Berney comes an electrifying new novel that follows a uniquely American crime family on an unforgettable journey across four decades. You've never met a family like the Mercurios. They say the American dream is going farther in life than your parents ever did. But how does that work if your parents are criminals? For Buddy, a low-level mob wise guy, and Lillian, a charming pickpocket, the criminal underworld is the only life they've ever known. When they're forced to flee the glittering Babylon of Las Vegas, they end up opening a club in Oklahoma City-a town that quickly feels like a gold mine of fresh marks and easy new money. Along for the ride are their five children, all of them raised into the family business of crime-until the day comes when they each have a chance to make their own way in the world, even if they can never completely escape the family's long, dark shadow. Jeremy, the family's Golden Boy, will throw himself into the glittering excesses of a drug-fueled Hollywood in the roaring 1980s. Tallulah, the daredevil, will find herself in the deadly Wild West of post-communist Moscow. Ray, the dope, the dumb muscle since he was a kid, wants nothing more than to put down his gun, but following orders is all he's ever known. Alice, the genius who renounced her life of crime long ago, now sees her white-shoe law firm being blackmailed and must tap into old skills to save both the company and her own life. And Piggy, a civilian always on the outside looking in on his crime family, desperate to be part of the gang. Crooks is an epic novel about a truly unforgettable crime family-and their lives across forty years of corruption, each Mercurio living with the weight of a dark legacy that ultimately threatens to destroy the whole family"--
