Ayenda. by Margolius, Marie,film director.; MSNBC Films (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by MSNBC Films in 2023.For a generation of Afghan women, education and opportunities were a given. Growing up post-Taliban meant they enjoyed a freedom their mothers never did. But that all changed in August 2021, when the Taliban regained power in Kabul. One group of women saw what was coming and made the difficult decision to leave their home and their families and, in the dark of night, escape for the security of a better life anywhere but there. Through the harrowing first person stories of the young women who make up the Afghan Women’s Soccer team, we experience the immediate day to day and personal impact of two decades of American foreign policy decisions (and failures).Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Wade in the Water. by Mesfin, David,film director.; Masekela, Selema,actor.; Schaffer, Sharon,actor.; Video Project (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Selema Masekela, Sharon SchafferOriginally produced by Video Project in 2023.Led by historical experts and community leaders in the BIPOC surfing movement, WADE IN THE WATER resurrects the thousand-year-old Black surfing tradition, stirring the next generation of Black surfers. The film explores the neglected history of Black surfing’s heritage by charting the origins of African aquatic culture and examining the evolution of Black surfing through the modern day.The journey begins with the first written account of surfing in the 1640s, from Africa, 200 years before Europeans described surfing in Oceania and the Pacific Islands. Advancing into the 20th century, Nick Gabaldón is highlighted as a surfing figure who is as significant as he is overlooked. We then learn of the shameful histories of weaponizing eminent domain and acts of white supremacist terrorism that drove Black communities and businesses from America's shores in places such as Manhattan Beach and Santa Monica. And finally, we bear witness to the reclamation of aquatic culture with the contemporary wave of young Black surfers.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Generation Flex. by Newton, Dorenna,film director.; Collective Eye Films (Firm),dst; Kanopy (Firm),dst;
Originally produced by Collective Eye Films in 2024.THERE'S SOMETHING BIG going on with boys.Maybe you've seen an influx of teenagers at your local gym. Maybe you've noticed more kids carrying around blender bottles. Maybe you've even witnessed the social media phenomenon that is a teenage fitness influencer. What's big with boys right now is getting huge. Jacked arms. Swole chests. Chiseled abs. Spurred by intense pressure and unattainable body standards, boys are risking their physical and mental health to build muscle and lose weight. We know this because for the last year Men's Health followed the stories of four young teens in their quests to bulk up and get cut. What we found was a dark world of social media manipulation, shady supplements, and very real consequences. And we talked to the top experts in the country—from behavioral health researchers to emergency clinicians—for their insights and advice. Whether you're a parent, caregiver, coach, or kid (and, actually, especially if you're a kid), GENERATION FLEX is a warning shot to the dangers of excessive exercise, fit-fluencer culture, and supplement overuse.Mode of access: World Wide Web.
