Originally produced by DEFA Film Library in 1990.An ecological catastrophe in the Ore Mountains on the Czech German border: Foresters and residents desperately try to save this landscape from forest devastation. But they face a doctrinaire state power that turns a blind eye and denies the facts.After the filmmaker’s initial proposal in 1983, permission to film was finally granted in 1987 and the crew shot in the Czech border region of Most and Teplice in 1988. But “forest dieback” was a forbidden word in East Germany. Consequently, none of the film’s eight versions passed censorship and the project was banned. Finally, in 1989/90, after the political changes in East Germany, the original version of the film was reconstructed, and the story about its censorship was included into the film.Mode of access: World Wide Web.

From the St. Lawrence River to north of the 51st parallel, the legendary Route 389 brings us to the heart of this meteor crater to meet some extraordinary individuals (astrophysicists, geologists, truck-stop manager, hikers). Digging deep into their memories, the Innu of Pessamit tell of the dispossession of their ancestral lands, which were flooded by the construction of the big hydro dams, leading to the disorientation of the young people from their community. After choosing to live in the boreal forest at the feet of the Uapishka Mountains, a guide and a hermit reveal their powerful connection with nature. Its attendees come from across the city and are offered care that grounds them in time and space, helping them achieve recovery and stability. Through a blend of therapy, education, and culture rooted in music and the arts, the Adamant offers a hopeful vision of what a humanistic approach to mental health care could look like. Originally produced by Video Project in 2022.A re-edited version of Joris Postema's Stop Filming Us, Vivuya and Twahirwa's film takes a closer look at the imbalance of power inherited from colonialism and its consequences on the representation of the DRC, cinematic and otherwise. The idea to produce this new version arose from discussions within Postema's film about whether a Western director is capable of capturing an image and narrative of the DRC shared by its citizens. It was then suggested that local directors work with the same footage to determine if a different story could be told from the same material to convey a local perspective. Re-editing the footage, they have made a version that better reflects their perspective and does justice to their own experiences. The resulting film contextualizes the project within the history of Western cinematic representations of the Congo, and highlights the inherent power discrepancies on either side of the camera. Featuring candid conversations with filmmakers, artists, scholars, and community members, STOP FILMING US BUT LISTEN seeks to subvert colonialist narratives familiar in the West and chart a new path for cinematic self-representation.Mode of access: World Wide Web.
